🐾 If your greyhound is limping but you cannot see anything obviously wrong — read this.
It might be smaller than you think. And it might be causing more pain than you realise. 🖤
What is a paw corn?
Corns are firm, circular areas of thickened tissue that develop in the toe pads of greyhounds and sighthounds. They are non-cancerous — but as your greyhound walks, that hardened tissue presses directly into the pad with every single step. On hard floors, gravel or stairs the pain can be significant.
And because greyhounds are stoic animals — they will often keep moving long after they should have stopped. 🖤
👀 What to look for:
🔴 A small, hard, round or ring-like spot on a toe pad
🔴 Limping that briefly improves with rest but returns when walking
🔴 Reluctance to walk on hard floors, stairs or gravel
🔴 Your greyhound pointing a toe or shifting weight off one leg
🔴 Repeated lameness without another obvious cause
Corns are most commonly found on the front paws — particularly the third and fourth toes — and should always be considered when a greyhound presents with unexplained lameness.
⚠️ What NOT to do:
Do not cut, dig, file or attempt to remove a corn at home.
A corn can closely resemble a splinter, grass seed, crack or other pad injury — and incorrect treatment can cause significant pain and infection. 🖤
✅ What to do:
Book a veterinary examination. Your vet can examine the pad, rule out other causes and discuss the most appropriate management for your individual dog. Options may include protective footwear, topical treatment, professional removal or surgery in persistent cases.
🐾 Quick greyhound owner tip:
Make a paw check part of your daily routine — especially after walks on hard or uneven surfaces. Run your fingers across each pad and between each toe. Early attention to a corn can save your greyhound a significant amount of discomfort and prevent a minor issue from becoming a major one. 🖤
