Got a call at work today from an old friend who is also a great hunter. He had shot a nice buck this morning but couldn’t find a single drop of blood. He uses a longbow and said he only got about 5” of pe*******on. I immediately thought shoulder and this deer is alive. But he was sure it was behind the shoulder as he could see it carrying the arrow as it ran away. I agreed to bring Kip out but I have to admit that I didn’t have much hope of finding the deer dead. They had grid searched for hours also with no luck. When we started at the hit site, Kip just sort of meandered in the direction that the buck went but still kept looking around. By the time we got to the end of the field, she was getting more interested. I told them to wait there as I figured she was probably following one of their footsteps from spreading the interdigital scent all around. The deeper we got into the brush the more intense she became. She was also winding something. I started to think, no way, and sure enough, she took me straight to this beautiful, old Marshall County warrior! 270 yards after being shot through 1 lung and the heart and had the arrow in him the whole time! A mature buck is like a whole different animal. We never did see a single drop of blood on the trail. Congrats to the hunter, and this is a good example of “you never know!”
