For thirty one straight years, one breed sat at the very top of America's dog rankings, and it was not close. πŸ‡ΊπŸ‡Έ

From 1991 until 2022, the Labrador Retriever was the most registered breed in the United States, holding the number one spot longer than any breed before it. Golden Retrievers, German Shepherds and poodles rose and fell in the rankings, but the Lab simply would not move.

In 2022 the French Bulldog finally edged it out, ending the longest reign in the history of the list. Even so, three decades at the top says something real about what families kept reaching for. πŸ†

A breed does not stay number one for thirty one years by accident. What do you think it is about Labs that kept so many households coming back to them?

Every Labrador with those little white paw hairs is wearing a champion's signature. πŸ†

In the 1920s, a black Labrador named Banchory Bolo became the breed's first dual champion in Britain, proving himself both in the show ring and out in the field. He belonged to Lorna, Countess Howe, one of the great early champions of the breed, and his success helped cement the Labrador's reputation as a dog that could look the part and do the work.

Bolo left a charming genetic calling card. The small patches of white hairs that sometimes appear on the pads and toes of Labs are still affectionately called Bolo marks, or Bolo pads, in his honor.

It is a lovely bit of living history. A dog from a century ago whose name still turns up whenever someone spots those tiny white hairs on a paw. Take a look at your own Lab's toes sometime, and you may find you are looking at a small piece of the breed's past.

Every yellow Labrador alive today can trace a thread back to a single dog born in 1899. 🐾 His name was Ben of Hyde, and he was the first yellow Labrador ever recorded and registered.

For decades before him, Labs were almost exclusively black, and the occasional yellow pup that appeared in a litter was often quietly culled or given away, treated as a flaw rather than a treasure. πŸ’› Ben, bred in Major Charles Radclyffe's kennel, changed that. He was allowed to live, to be shown, and crucially to breed, and through his descendants the yellow coat spread and eventually flourished.

It is remarkable to think how close that warm golden color came to being erased entirely, simply because of fashion and prejudice about what a proper Labrador should look like.

Now yellow is one of the most beloved coats in the breed, ranging from pale cream to deep fox red. If you share your life with a yellow Lab, you are looking at Ben of Hyde's living legacy. What shade is yours, from palest cream to rich gold?
