The Lander Field Office has released an environmental assessment that analyzes future wild horse gather, removal and fertility control operations in the North Lander Wild Horse Complex. Your comments on this EA will be accepted until February 18 through the BLM’s ePlanning website: https://eplanning.blm.gov/eplanning-ui/project/2014081/510

The North Lander Complex is in SE Fremont County and is made up of the Conant Creek, Dishpan Butte, Muskrat Basin and Rock Creek Mountain herd management areas. The North Lander Complex’s appropriate management level (AML)—the point at which the wild horse population is consistent with the land’s capacity to support it and other mandated uses of those lands—is 320–536 horses. The BLM estimates that there are close to 2,000 horses in the complex.

As part of our efforts to use the latest science in the management and protection of wild horses and b***os, the BLM today announced we are accepting proposals for new research projects to develop safe, effective and longer-lasting fertility control methods for wild horse mares.

The BLM is also accepting proposals for research that analyzes how wild horses and b***os interact with their environment, including how present and future climate change may impact wild horse and b***o management.

This year, the Bureau of Land Management commemorated the 50th anniversary of the Wild Free-Roaming Horses and B***os Act of 1971. The BLM launched a new webpage, released a commemorative 24-month planner, provided anniversary-branded promotional items to raise awareness, and hosted public events across the country, including educational trail rides through herd management areas that highlighted the history of wild horses and b***os on public lands.

This anniversary year was also a landmark year for wild horse and b***o adoptions, with over 8,600 animals either adopted or sold – the largest number placed into private care in 24 years. The BLM and its partners hosted over 100 events across the country that facilitated these adoptions and sales. At the same time, the BLM treated more animals with fertility control in Fiscal Year 2021 than have ever been treated in a single year, slowing herd growth and reducing the need for future removals.
