Lost and Gone Forever
We lost a month this year. We don’t know where it went, and we are sure we won’t get it back. It was August and we remember it being hot. We remember being on the road for part of it, travelling to Denver and back many times. We remember being tied to the house and getting little to nothing done other than the tasks it took to survive each day.
What would we expect differently after having a major back surgery? To be honest we didn’t really know what to expect. We guessed that there would be considerable pain from the surgery for at least 10 days. We guessed that there would be limited mobility and some “caregiving” that would occupy us for some time. Previous surgeries had prepared us for some of that. Nothing had prepared us for what it turned out to be.
Amy is as tough a person as you can find. Grit, super high pain tolerance, determination to get better, and many other traits that have caused her to get through surgery recovery more quickly than doctors predicted. So, when the nerve pain hit, confined her movement and stalled her recovery, we were stymied. We spent hours on the phone and computer trying to communicate with the surgical team and the post-surgery care team. We failed countless times finding drug and activity combinations that would get the pain level bearable. We’re still working on it. Not fun!
Being on an every two hours medication schedule, 24 hours a day, wears a body out. Add pain and everyday chores and we begin to understand how a month can disappear. A fog sets in. We got forgetful. We got touchy. Thank goodness for smartphones with calendars, alarms, and timers. We were reminded constantly that there was something that needed to be done. Thank goodness for notes and spreadsheets. When an alarm sounded, a note or a column on a spreadsheet reminded us what it was that needed to be done.
So, we’re surviving and looking forward to riding with you all again. We’ll never get August 2026 back. It’s lost and gone forever. We can look forward to better days and keep working toward a full recovery with much, much less pain.
