As we continue to roll out our new packaging, we are excited to introduce our new 3 ounce bags! Is your pup a little picky? Maybe you are buying a gift for a friends pet and don’t know what flavor they would like. The 3 ounce bags are the perfect way to try out a new treat, or a variety of flavors! Even more exciting news, these 3 ounce packages will be available at select retailers in the Denver International Airport, so that pups in other states can taste delicious Cosmo’s biscuits!

August is Itchy Pet Awareness Month!

Does your dog scratch the same spot? Are you noticing red, irritated skin or constant licking? If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone. Let’s take a closer look at what may be causing your pup to feel uncomfortable!

Why is my pet so itchy?

There are many reasons your pet could be experiencing itchy skin including
* Food allergies or sensitivities
* Flea bites or other parasites
* Dry climate
* Bacterial or yeast infections
* Underlying health issues

Why does it matter?
When your pup begins to feel itchy, it can lead to excessive scratching, chewing, licking, or rubbing against objects to soothe the skin. Excessive itching can lead to open sores, infections, hair loss, and over all, major discomfort for your pet. Luckily, there are ways you can soothe your pets skin and end the itch and scratch cycle! We have plenty of product in store to help alleviate and treat itchy skin.

Proper grooming and skin care tips:
Implementing the proper skin care routine for your pet can help soothe their skin. Some simple changes include
* Regular bathing with a gentle shampoo
* Gentle brushing daily to distribute natural oils
* Changing your pets diet to avoid allergens, and include omega 3's that are extremely beneficial to coat health!
* Keep in mind every pup is different. Talk to an associate about how to tailor a routine that works for you

Taking action against in home allergens:
There are a few common culprits to in home allergens which include
* Dust mites
* Pet dander
* Pollen
* Mold spores
Vacuuming and dusting your home regularly can help quell these culprits.
Cleaning your pets living space often can help, along with using hypoallergenic bedding!

A Small Update to Our Weekday Hours

Hello Valued Customer!

A quick update: starting Monday, July 20, we're adjusting our weekday hours to close at 6pm instead of 7pm. This lets us run more efficiently while still giving you the same great service during the hours you shop with us most.
Weekend hours are staying exactly the same.

Thank you, as always, for being part of the Cosmo community. We wouldn't be here without you, and we can't wait to see you soon.

You may have noticed that we are undergoing a major glow up in our packaging! Though the change will be gradual, we are very excited to have colorful, and durable packaging that reflects the time, effort and love we put into our biscuits! With this change, we are slowly moving away from canola oil, in favor of coconut and sunflower oil! Thank you for being patient with us as we embark on this journey. We cant wait until our bakery refresh is complete!

Summer is here! Let’s talk about how to keep your pet safe during these hotter months!

Summer is the best time to explore the outdoors with your dog, but be sure to watch out for seasonal risks like pests, overheating, and harmful algae blooms.

On-The-Spot! - Fleas and Ticks in Colorado
Fleas and Ticks (https://extension.colostate.edu/resource/colorado-ticks-and-tick-borne-diseases/) are not top of mind for us in Colorado due to our hot and dry climate. However, Ticks especially can be an issue for your pup in the Spring & Summer months.
Ticks are found in wooded areas, foothills and tall grasses. They are even found up to 10,000 feet in elevation!
There are 27 species of ticks in Colorado alone & studies show that Tick Borne illnesses are on the rise, so prevention is key!

Preventative Measures:
We carry a few options in store to help prevent and remove ticks!
Tick tools are a safe and easy measure to have on hand when hiking or camping to easily remove ticks from your dog.

Overheating and Dehydration
Unlike us, pets can not effectively sweat, so they rely on panting to cool down. This process depletes fluids, so it is critical to focus on gradual cooling and rehydration. Be on the lookout for the signs of overheating that include
1. Excessive panting
2. Overly red tongue or gums
3. Thick drool
4. Rapid heart rate
5. Poor skin elasticity

You can also easily check for dehydration through the Skin Tent Test! Gently pinch and lift the skin at the back of your pet's neck or between their shoulder blades. It should immediately snap back. If it slowly sinks or stays peaked, your pet is likely dehydrated.

If you suspect your pet is overheating, get them to shade immediately and provide cold water. NEVER use ice cold water as it can constrict the blood vessels and make the situation worse.

Keeping Paws Cool:
Pups paws can be ultra sensitive to hot surfaces! Look out for
Dancing or “tippy tappy” movements from your pup in hot or cold weather!
You can use booties for hot days as long as you let your pets paws breathe after, as they do sweat through their paws to keep them cool!

TOXIC Algae Blooms (https://coepht.colorado.gov/toxic-algae) in water
Toxic algae blooms (cyanobacteria) naturally occur in Colorado waters but thrive in warm, stagnant, nutrient-rich conditions, usually from May to September. These blooms can produce dangerous toxins that are hazardous to humans and pets. Local authorities strictly advise staying out of the water and keeping pets away when blooms are present.
Look for thick pea soup or paint like texture, thick mats of foam or scum on the shoreline & colors like bright green, blue-green, red, and turquoise.

Hydration is essential, helping maintain your pets digestion, kidney health, skin and coat and over all cooling of the body. If your pet isn’t properly hydrated, it can lead to major health concerns. Dehydration is easy to spot and treat when you know the proper tips and tricks!

Signs of dehydration
If you spot these signs it may mean your pet needs to drink more water
*Dry or sticky gums
*Lethargy
*Loss of appetite
*Sunken eyes
*Reduced skin elasticity

How can I get my pet to drink more water?
Some pets drink plenty of water naturally while others need some encouragement. We recommend you try:
*Keeping your pets water fresh by changing it regularly
*Add ice to make the water bowl fun
*Keep more than one water bowl in your house for plenty of accessible hydration
*Use a pet water fountain as animals are attracted to moving water
*Add moisture to meals
*Bring plenty of water when exploring outdoors

Seasonal hydration:
When hydrating your pet in the summer months be mindful of:
*Providing ample shade and rest areas in your outdoor space and on walks
*Avoiding prolonged activity in the heat
*Ensuring constant access to clean water

*Be extra mindful of your senior pets drinking habits. Excess or too little water consumption o can indicate larger health issues*

Dog friendly coconut-citrus electrolyte :
Ingredients
½ cup plain coconut water
2 Tbsp fresh orange juice
¼ cup of fresh lemon juice
¼ Tsp salt
1 Tbsp raw honey

Also:
*OC Raw HydroLyfe (by Lyfe Pet) is a powdered hydration aid formulated specifically for dogs that we recommend
*Adding unflavored Pedialyte to your pets water in. 1:1 ratio can also be used to treat mild dehydration, but not long term

Its Spring! Which means your dog may be putting strange things in their mouths that lead to dietary discomfort

Dietary changes
Dogs are scavengers, and can sometimes ingest table scraps, trash, animal droppings etc. Keeping these items away from your pup can thwart diarrhea. Switching the proteins they ate can also have an effect if the process is done too quickly. Be sure to take your time with switching foods.
Hot temperatures
Diarrhea can sometimes be an indicator of heat exhaustion or heat stroke, in conjunction with other symptoms. If your pup is panting, reluctant to move, drooling, whining, or is confused, contact your vet immediately.
Intestinal parasites
While most common in puppies and shelter dogs, any pup can encounter intestinal parasites. If your dog is experiencing frequent bouts of diarrhea, bringing a stool sample to the vet can test it for parasites.
Food intolerances or allergic reactions
Major signs of food allergies can be easy to spot. They include symptoms like hot spots, black nail beds, red areas of the body, and a sour smell. However, diarrhea is often a sign of a mild food allergy, that can be mitigated by changing your pups food.
Stress or IBS
Stress and bacterial buildup can cause a condition called colitis, which is inflammation in the small intestine. Tell tale signs are low volumes of stool, containing mucus or blood. This type of stool can also indicate irritable bowel syndrome, or IBS.
Pancreatitis
The pancreas can be effected by an array of things like high fat meals, table scraps, or dietary indiscretion. Diarrhea is often accompanied by vomiting, stomach pain and lethargy. In you notice these symptoms, contact your vet immediately.
Age related diarrhea
Though dogs may get mild diarrhea from time to time that may not cause much concern, its important to be extra cautious when dealing with an elderly dog or a puppy. This is because they are more susceptible to a wider range of issues due to their weekend immune systems
