🐾 HAPPY DOGS DAY! 🐾

Today is all about celebrating those goofy, loyal, loving, sometimes-mischievous creatures who somehow manage to make our lives better just by being in them. ❤️🐶

Dogs don’t care how much money you make, what kind of car you drive, or whether your house is clean. They care that you’re there. They’re happy to see you after five minutes—or five hours. They forgive us when we’re grumpy, listen when we talk, and somehow know exactly when we need a little extra love.

So today, give your dog an extra treat. Take the long walk. Throw the ball one more time. Let them have that favorite spot on the couch. And maybe give them a few extra belly rubs for good measure. ❤️

And for those of us in Animal Control, we get to see every kind of dog—lost, scared, happy, goofy, stubborn, sweet, and everything in between. Every single one reminds us why what we do matters.

Happy Dogs Day from all of us at Weston Animal Control! 🐾

Please keep an eye out for Artemis, a very dark chocolate-colored Bengal cat who has been missing for 5 days from the Gilbert Highway/Westport Turnpike area.

If you live in the area, please check your property, sheds, garages, porches, and anywhere a cat might have sought shelter. Artemis may be farther from home than expected.

We've been reading the comments on Gucci's post, and we'd like to clarify something.

The purpose of that post was never to place blame on a grieving family which, is why the comments were turned off.

The purpose was the same as our recent post about the snapping turtle: to bring awareness to distracted driving, speeding, and personal accountability behind the wheel.

In the snapping turtle post, we asked people to think about what if it had been someone's pet... or even a child. The point wasn't the species involved. The point was that paying attention while driving matters.

The snapping turtle incident was heartbreaking.

Gucci's case was heartbreaking **and** different. Failing to stop after striking a domestic animal and failing to notify authorities isn't just the wrong thing to do—it is a crime. A simple phone call could have brought answers sooner and shown basic compassion to a family who loved their pet.

Instead of directing anger toward Gucci's owner, we hope you'll take the message these posts were intended to share.

Slow down.

Put the phone away.

Watch the road.

If you hit an animal, stop if it is safe to do so and call for help.

If even one person changes their driving habits because of these posts, if one turtle makes it safely across the road, if one family's pet is spared, or if one child is seen because someone chose to pay attention instead of looking at a phone, then sharing these difficult stories was worth it.

**His Name Was Gucci.**

He wasn't "just a cat."

His name was **Gucci**.

He had a home. He had a family. He was loved. He greeted his people, found his favorite places to nap, and lived a life where he knew he was safe.

Now, because of an irresponsible driver, Gucci's family is living every pet owner's worst nightmare.

Every time we respond to a call like this, we see more than an animal. We see a life that mattered. We see a family whose world has been turned upside down. We see an empty spot on the couch, an untouched food bowl, and a home that will never feel quite the same.

Please remember that when you're driving.

Slow down. Stay off your phone. Watch the road. If you strike an animal, stop if it is safe to do so and call for help. That one phone call could save a life—or at the very least, give a family the answers they deserve.

Gucci deserved to go home.

Instead, his family had to say goodbye far sooner than they ever imagined.

To Gucci's family, we are so deeply sorry for your loss. Thank you for giving him a life filled with love. We hope that, in time, your happy memories of him will outweigh the heartbreak.

Today, the animal control community across Connecticut is grieving.

The Town of Middlebury announced the tragic passing of Animal Control Officer Oreste "Rusty" P. Bona, a man who dedicated more than two decades of his life to serving both his community and its animals. Our hearts are with his family, friends, coworkers, and everyone in Middlebury who had the privilege of knowing him.

Many people don't realize just how small the animal control profession truly is. Connecticut has 179 towns, yet there are only an estimated **150 to 250 Animal Control Officers** serving the entire state. Many officers cover multiple towns, work alone, or are part-time. We may wear different uniforms and work for different municipalities, but we all share the same mission: protecting animals, protecting people, and answering the calls that most never see.

When we lose one of our own, it isn't just another headline. It is personal.

Every Animal Control Officer knows the long hours, the difficult calls, the heartbreaking cases, and the emotional toll this job can take. We celebrate each other's successes, lean on one another during the hardest moments, and mourn together when tragedy strikes.

Today, we stand beside the Town of Middlebury in honoring Officer Rusty's life and his years of dedicated service. His commitment to the animals and people of his community will not be forgotten.

To Officer Rusty, thank you for every life you touched, every animal you saved, and every family you helped. Your watch has ended.

Last week, we shared the heartbreaking story of a snapping turtle that was struck by a vehicle.

This morning, we responded to another tragic call.

A beautiful black-and-white domestic short-haired cat was found after being struck and killed by a vehicle.

**The cat was found at the entrance to Upper Parish Road, right off Georgetown Road.** Due to the injuries sustained, we are unfortunately unable to determine whether the cat is male or female.

Out of respect for the animal, **photos are being withheld.**

Two different animals. Two different days. The same heartbreaking outcome.

We know that not every collision can be prevented. Animals can dart into the road without warning, and sometimes there isn't enough time to avoid them safely. But many crashes happen because drivers are distracted, traveling too fast for conditions, or simply aren't paying attention to what's around them.

Please slow down. Put the phone away. Watch the shoulders of the road. Be especially alert during the early morning, evening, and after rain, when both wildlife and pets are more likely to be on the move.

You all made my day!!! We got her!!!!

🚨*PLEASE HELP US FIND THIS DOG*🚨
Dog gone recovery has already been notified!

We are asking everyone to please keep an eye out and **call immediately with any sightings.**

This sweet dog was involved in a motor vehicle accident this morning while riding in the car. Frightened after the crash, she ran from the scene.

📍 **Last known sighting:** Valley Forge Road / Lyons Plain Road

She was last seen **dragging a leash with her harness only partially on**, so she may be able to slip out of it if someone tries to grab her.

Please **do not chase her**, as she is likely terrified and may run farther. If you see her, note the exact location, direction of travel if she's moving, and call us immediately with any information.

Even the smallest sighting could be the one that brings her home safely.

Thank you to everyone who keeps an eye out and shares this post. Let's work together to get this scared girl home where she belongs. ❤️🐾 Her family is devastated!!
