Halloween is coming! ...but your pets don't know what that means. π€
All they know is that suddenly an endless parade of strange-looking people are knocking on the door and ringing your doorbell for hours. π₯Ί
βΌοΈ Donβt make Halloween night their first practice! Now is the time to prepare.
βοΈ Positively condition them to their cute little costumes NOW, introducing slowly and with high value rewards. Remember: fast is slow and slow is fast. Go at your pet's pace and if they seem uncomfortable, stop the session. End on a positive/playful note and try again later. If they don't seem comfortable with the costume by Halloween, I recommend photoshop!
βοΈ Prepare two degrees of safety for trick-or-treating time. Utilize leashes, pet gates, and/or separate closed-off rooms to ensure that escape artists or nervous pets can't slip out the door when you're distracted by the cute little kids.
βοΈ Practice door manners by having familiar guests knock on your door and enter the house. Make this a fun game with high value treats and distracting activities for your pets. **If this is too big of an ask for your anxious pet, prepare soft rock/reggae music or TVs playing to help cover up the noise of the door activity.
βοΈ For extremely anxious or behaviorally complex pets that will be severely stressed by the goings-on, prepare your home to NOT receive trick-or-treaters at the door. There is no shame in prioritizing your pets' welfare on Halloween. This may include but is not limited to turning off your lights at the front of the house, putting the candy bowl out near the sidewalk so people don't even come up to the porch, and putting a "please do not knock or ring bell" sign on your front door. Prepare your music or TV to play loudly enough to cover the noise. Prepare your enrichment activities. If your pet takes situational anxiety medication, check right now to make sure you have enough to last through Halloween!
βοΈ Finally, when the festivities have ended, make sure to check your yards and walking routes the next morning for wrappers and candy that can endanger sneaky pets that like to scavenge.
π Have a safe and happy Howl-oween!
