Summertime means fun in the sun. Do you know what that fun in the sun can bring? Heat stroke. When temperatures rise, we have to be extra aware of how our four-legged family handle the heat. Dogs cannot cool themselves as easily as humans; they only sweat from the pads of their feet, so panting is their main method of self-cooling. For some breeds, specifically brachycephalic breeds, panting is more difficult. Brachycephalic breeds would be your typically "smooshed face" breeds. These include most breeds of bulldogs (French, English, American), Pugs, Boxers, Boston Terriers, Shih tzus and Pekingese to name a few. Because of their facial conformation, heavy panting causes the tissue in the back of the throat to swell., making it even more difficult to pant and breathe.

When temperatures are rising, it is best to keep pets indoors and limit walks and outdoor activities to early morning and evening hours. Provide plenty of fresh water, breaks in the shade or inside in air conditioning, and keep a close eye on your pet's behavior. Signs to watch for include excessive or noisy panting, sticky drool, bright red or pale gums, confusion, vomiting, diarrhea, and collapse. A dog's normal temperature is 99.5 to 102.5 degrees; a reading of 104 or higher is a sign you should seek urgent veterinary care.

Summertime is upon us! With that comes vacations and road trips and some activities your dogs just can't (or don't want to) go along for. This often means heading to a boarding facility for their own version of R&R.

With boarding, comes the increased risk for kennel cough and other upper respiratory diseases. While we require all pets to be vaccinated for kennel cough and canine influenza, not every facility does. This doesn't mean you should skip those vaccinations, just that the majority of pets there WON'T be vaccinated.

The most common sign of kennel cough is just that; a dry, hacking cough. The majority of these cases don't have any other signs or symptoms, and the pet is acting normal otherwise. In older, or immune compromised patients, you can see other signs typical of a "cold": sneezing, nasal discharge, lethargy, loss of appetite. These signs usually show up 10-14 days AFTER exposure, so long after your pet has returned home. In most cases, the coughing resolves in a few days to a week. But some pets need a little help (and owners like to be able to sleep!)

If you do believe your pet has kennel cough, and make an appointment to be seen, we ask that on arrival, you call from the car to let us know you are here. Please keep your dog(s) in the car until our staff call you. At that time, you will be directed to our outdoor examination area (weather permitting).

Silas has a spring and summer time public service announcement: Please keep your pets inside if the lawn mower is running. Even "chasing" the lawn mower seems like harmless fun to a herding breed, until its not. Silas had a bad experience about 2 weeks ago. His foot got caught, either by the tire or the blades. He was rushed to our sister hospital, Airpark Animal Hospital, where he was assessed for severe trauma to several toes. As a result, he was referred to CARE in Frederick where he was treated by amputating one toe and patching up the others that suffered a degloving injury.
Now Silas is spending his summer in a bandage and a cone (the childhood equivalent of missing summertime due to a cast!). Take it from Silas, he is getting 5 star treatment for a zero star experience. He does not recommend!

Just a friendly reminder that, in most cases, fawns don't need rescuing. The doe is often close by and keeping the attention of predators off her baby. Anyone with questions about fawns, or other young wild animals, is encouraged to call the state’s wildlife hotline at 877-463-6497.

The Maryland Department of Natural Resources cautions anyone who encounters a fawn to avoid disturbing it and resist the urge to feed or handle it. Even if no adult deer are seen, the fawn’s mother is likely near, and the fawn requires no assistance. Read more: https://ow.ly/VCrc50Z1cqU
