Who's going?! 🤗

Fall rabbit show season is coming up! 🐰🍂
..Not including the Maryland State Fair rabbit show this weekend, who's going?! 🙋‍♀️

I put together a quick calendar of some of the upcoming Fall shows that are within a reasonable driving distance for our 4-H Rabbit Judging group. If you’re able to attend any of these, I highly encourage you to go!

Rabbit shows are such a great way to learn, even if you aren’t showing an animal yourself. Attend a show, watch the judging, write for a judge when the opportunity is available, or simply listen as the judge explains what they see in each rabbit. Pay attention to the terminology they use, what traits they prioritize, and how they compare animals within a class. There is so much to learn just by watching and listening!

The more rabbits you see and the more judges you hear evaluate them, the more your eye develops and the more confident you become in your own ability to evaluate an animal.

One show I did not include on the flyer because it is a little farther away is the Washington County, PA show on September 20th. It is still an option if anyone is interested in making the drive!

Have fun, learn something new, and don't be afraid to ask questions! You never know what you might learn at the next table. 🐇📚

🐰 Hare Hotel’s Orion, Broken Black NZ Buck 🐰

Orion is a 4-month-old Broken Black New Zealand buck looking for a new barn!

We’re really excited about this young buck and his potential. His sire, Hare Hotel’s Comet, was BOV Broken at the 2025 ARBA Convention, BIS at the CCRBA last fall, and currently has 9 legs. We’re very excited about what Comet is producing, and Orion is one of his promising young sons!

Last but not least... what a year this has been for Gwen! 1st place Sr. Buck and Sr. Doe at Convention, Best of Group at PaSRBA, then a full sweep at Dwarf Hotot Nationals!

This breed has been by far the most frustrating and difficult breed Hare Hotel has ever raised (although the English Lops gave me a run for my money back in the day 😂). And through all of it, Gwen has shown so much perseverance and determination. Aunt Meemes couldn’t be more proud of her!

People often ask what breed of rabbit they should get for their kids, and if they really want their kids to take on a breeding project, my advice is to let them choose a breed they love and show genuine interest in. That love for the breed is what keeps them going when things get frustrating and nothing seems to be going right.

And Gwen has definitely had those stretches. She went an entire YEAR without a single live kit born. Then, when she finally started getting kits, she had china eyes, pinched hindquarters, and several that their body type looked like mini meatloaves that melted in the oven. 😂

But she kept breeding and kept trying. More importantly, she really put the time into learning what makes a good Dwarf Hotot. She studied the SOP, worked on developing her eye, and started making her own decisions about what she wanted to keep and where she wanted to go with her breeding program.

She’s still learning and working hard at it, but I think that’s what made this year feel so special. After all those hours in the barn, all the breedings that didn’t work out, and all those little melted meatloaves 😂, it was pretty sweet to see things finally start coming together for her.

So proud of you, Gwen! ❤️

While I’m posting about Sweepstakes, I have to brag on the Dukehart Rex girls too!!! So proud of these girls and the year they’ve had. They finished so strong in each of their varieties and overall!

They also had some pretty exciting firsts this year, including their first 2nd Reserve in Show in an Open show and their first Reserve in Show in a Youth show! ❤️

These kids really put in the work and the time. They’re always thinking ahead to future breedings, sorting through current litters, talking through their goals, and figuring out what they want to improve next.

It’s been so much fun as their aunt to watch their eye develop and see them become more confident in the decisions they make with their rabbits. There have been successes and disappointments this year, but they’re always learning and already strategizing for future breedings.

They’ve definitely been bitten by the bunny bug, and I love that we get to do all of this together. Such a fun season with these girls! ❤️🐰

This aunt is a little delayed in posting, but we’re so proud of Ava and all the hard work she’s put into her Blacks and Broken New Zealands this past year!

She showed at her very first ARBA Convention in Indy (& won BOV Broken), has worked hard on her breeding program, and is already looking forward to the fall show season.

I’ve never met a kid who can sort through a barn faster than she can. 😂 She knows what she wants, knows what she’s working toward, and is such a quick study. It’s been so much fun watching her learn, make decisions, and develop an eye for her rabbits.

She says she might want to become an ARBA judge one day, and I really hope she does! ❤️

Pretty proud of this kid and excited to see where all that determination takes her!
