I started making healthy dog treats because of Shelby, my beloved Golden Retriever who was my service dog. When I realized Shelby was allergic to so many foods, I made it my mission to make her some treats that she could enjoy without getting sick. It became a labor of love that led

to developing Chef Lou, a line of healthy, dehydrated treats for dogs and cats. Chef Lou treats have ZERO preservatives or additives and come in a wide variety of Chicken Jerky, Chicken & Apple Jerky, and Salmon Jerky. Shelby crossed over the Rainbow bridge in February 2024 and as my inspiration for this line of healthy treats, she will forever serve as Brand Ambassador for Chef Lou.

Next up in our Rainbow Bridge series, we are deeply honored to celebrate a very special, incredibly talented girl: Chef Lou's amazing second Service Animal, the one and only Shelby! 🌈🐾

Some dogs are just meant to find you, and Shelby's story is nothing short of a true Christmas miracle. She was originally promised to another family from the breeder's litter, but right around the holidays, Chef Lou received the phone call that would change his life forever. The breeder reached out to say the other family had backed out, offering him the chance to bring this beautiful female Golden Retriever pup home before they placed an ad in the paper. He jumped at the opportunity without a single second thought, and the rest is a beautiful history. For Chef Lou, her impact is immeasurable: "Shelby truly saved me, giving me the strength to keep going on without her."

If you've ever watched the movie UP, you already know exactly what Shelby's personality was like. She was our real-life Doug—hilariously goofy, fiercely loyal, and delightfully obsessed with squirrels! 🐿 That same intense enthusiasm naturally translated to snacks. She was famously treat-obsessed, which made her the absolute perfect Chief Taste Tester for our growing business. Every single recipe had to pass Shelby's rigorous, tail-wagging standards.

Her mommy, A.d. Alvarado , captured her spirit perfectly with this beautiful tribute: "Shelby Baby was more than a dog. She was a light, she had beautiful energy and a love for all. She was empathetic to our emotional needs. Kept us on our toes with her doofy personality. The love of my life and soul dog. She will forever be missed and stories will forever be told about her."

Continuing our Rainbow Bridge tribute series, today we are honoring an incredible boy named Buddy! 🐾 Buddy belonged to our amazing customer and friend Jen, and he was a true master of the dinnertime happy dance.

Jen shared this sweet memory of her loyal best friend:

"Buddy was the best boy, loyal and sweet. He taught himself a dinner dance, he would get all excited and do tippy-taps with his nails on the wood floors. Then he'd spin in circles. The one time he was 'bad' was when we had the vet trim his nails. It took SIX vet techs to hold him down, I didn't expect that from my good boy. I think he was proud of himself. Autumn (Buddy's favorite baby is 5 now) still asks about him. I say he's running on the beach in doggie heaven and can't figure out why he hasn't come home yet."

We know without a doubt that Buddy is up there showing off those famous tippy-taps, getting endless treats, and running on the beach alongside our girls, Shelby and Goose! Thank you, Jen, for sharing Buddy's joyful spirit and hilarious nail-trimming antics with our community.

Today's Rainbow Bridge tribute is deeply personal, as we honor a very special Chocolate Lab: Chef Lou's own heart dog and ultimate wingwoman, Goose. 🤎

"When she first came to me, her name was Lucy, but one look into her eyes and I knew it didn't fit. 'Goose' was the first name that came to mind because she was immediately the best wingwoman in the game. She wasn't a service animal from the get-go; she was just a normal dog with an extraordinary, innate talent for feeling emotions.

When a drunk driver caused the crash that changed my life, Goose stepped up. She naturally possessed the energy of a service dog, so we began training. Proudly wearing her hot pink vest, she aced her Public Access Test on the very first try. She helped me walk, reminded me to take my medications, picked up anything I dropped, and grounded me through the intense stress and stimuli that reminded me of the crash.

She got me through the darkest days, including the grueling court case, and her unwavering support is the reason I dedicate my time to advocacy today. I cried on her shoulder countless times. She was my therapist and my lifeline. Goose saved me when I felt I wasn't worth saving, and I carry her paw print tattooed on my right forearm forever."

Next up in our Rainbow Bridge series, we are honoring a very special girl: Cali, an incredibly smart and beautiful Black Lab and Border Collie mix who belonged to Chef's good friend, Lydia Marcus! 🐾

Cali (March2009 - November 2023) she was adopted from the Southern California Labrador Retriever Rescue at just four months old and went on to live a life full of purpose, love, and adventure. Known affectionately as "Caliente" for her spicy spirit and "Calibu" for her love of Malibu, She was an absolute star.

At just two years old. Cali earned her therapy dog certification and spent five amazing years volunteering with the Lend A Paw group alongside Lydia. She brought unconditional love and comfort to school reading programs, developmentally disabled adults, senior living facilities, and even LAX, where she helped travelers destress through the PUP and United Paws programs.

A natural learner and performer, Cali's absolute best trick was walking in slow-motion on command! When she wasn't mastering scent work or showing off her stellar obedience, Cali lived for off-leash hiking, catching the breeze out the car window, and her ultimate passion: chasing and retrieving a ball.

We know Cali is up there enjoying endless games of fetch and running on the beach alongside our girls, Shelby and Goose. Thank you, Lydia, for sharing this amazing therapy dog's beautiful legacy with our community!

As part of our Rainbow Bridge story series this week, Chanel's mom wanted to share this beautiful tribute to her incredible fur baby:

"Chanel was spoiled from the moment we brought her home at 9 weeks old. She loved dressing up, but her favorite trick was smiling on command, which always made everyone laugh. She was my best friend, the best of the best, and brought so much love and joy into our lives. Chanel passed away in 2022, just months before her 16th birthday, and she is missed every single day." 🐾💜
