🦎 Meet Zola! This sweet girl came to see us for some help with a pretty impressive case of retained shed around her face.

While shedding is completely normal for reptiles, sometimes pieces of old skin don't come off as they should. This is called retained shed (dysecdysis). When shed builds up—especially around the eyes, toes, tail tip, or other delicate areas—it can become more than just a cosmetic problem. Retained shed can cause irritation and, when it constricts an area, potentially interfere with healthy circulation.

Zola had several layers of shed retained around her face and eyes, so our team carefully softened and removed the areas that needed a little extra help. Peeling or pulling stuck shed at home isn't recommended, as removing skin before it's ready can damage the healthy tissue underneath.

💧 Proper husbandry plays a HUGE role in healthy shedding! Appropriate temperatures, humidity, hydration, nutrition, enclosure setup, and access to safe surfaces to rub against can all help reptiles shed normally.

If your reptile has shed that just won't budge—particularly around the eyes, toes, nostrils or tail—it's a good idea to have them evaluated rather than trying to force it off at home.

Zola was an absolute trooper for us, and we're so happy we could help this little lady feel more comfortable. 💚🦎

🐾 Another new face… or two! Meet Damien & Porter! 🐾

If it seems like we've been introducing a lot of new faces lately, you're not imagining it! 😂 We've been doing a little catching up, and we're excited for you to get to know some of the newer members of the Cedar Hill family — both two-legged AND four-legged. 💙

Meet Damien, one of our Veterinary Assistants, pictured with one of our newest patients, Porter! Porter came to see us for his very first visit at just 9 weeks old and was the perfect little model for Damien's introduction. 🥹🐶

While Damien is newer to the veterinary field, he isn't new to the world of animal health. Before joining Cedar Hill, he spent several years working in a laboratory setting with one of the outside diagnostic labs our clinic uses, including time in a management role.

Since joining our team, what has stood out most is how genuinely Damien cares about the experience he provides — not only for our patients, but for the people who love them, too. ❤️ He is eager to learn, asks questions, and truly wants to continue growing so he can help make veterinary care a better experience for everyone involved.

We're very appreciative to have him as part of our team and can't wait to watch him continue to grow in veterinary medicine!

🛁🦎 It’s bath day for Betty Jo!

Our resident bearded dragon, Betty Jo, gets a warm soak about once a week — although she seems to think bath time is actually an opportunity to go bobbing for Dubia roaches. 😂

Regular soaks can be a great addition to a bearded dragon’s husbandry routine. They can help with hydration, provide an opportunity to drink, help loosen retained shed, and can sometimes encourage bowel movements. We typically recommend offering a shallow, comfortably warm soak about once weekly, with more frequent soaking recommended in certain situations based on the individual dragon’s needs.

🥬 What’s on Betty Jo’s menu?
Her regular diet includes a variety of fresh leafy greens and microgreens, along with appropriately sized Dubia roaches about 2–3 times per week. A varied, properly balanced diet is an important part of keeping adult beardies happy and healthy!

And yes… apparently the roaches taste better when you have to catch them in the bathtub. 🤦‍♀️🪳

💕 NEW PATIENT SPOTLIGHT: Meet Hazel Lee! 💕

Please join us in welcoming 10-week-old Hazel Lee to the Cedar Hill family! 🥹🐾 This sweet little girl weighed in at a whopping 5.2 lbs for her very first visit with us!

Those early puppy appointments are some of our favorites—and they're also an important part of setting puppies up for a happy, healthy life. 🩺

During puppy visits, we're not only keeping them on track with vaccines and preventative care. We're also monitoring their growth and development, checking for any concerns early, discussing nutrition and parasite prevention, and helping owners navigate everything that comes along with raising a new puppy. 🐶

They're also a great opportunity for puppies to start learning that the vet doesn't have to be a scary place! Lots of positive experiences, treats, snuggles and gentle handling while they're young can go a long way toward making future visits less stressful. 💗

Hazel Lee was an absolute sweetheart for her first visit, and we can't wait to watch this tiny girl grow! 🥰

🐒💕 Meet Daisy!

Daisy is a 1-year-old squirrel monkey who recently made quite the trip to Cedar Hill for her first wellness visit with us! She received a great report from Dr. Headlee and kept us all entertained with that sweet little face — and her opinion of the camera. 👅😂

We LOVE seeing primates at Cedar Hill, but those adorable little faces come with a big reality: primates are a LOT of work and a very long commitment.

Squirrel monkeys can live 20–25+ years in captivity and require specialized nutrition, housing, enrichment, social interaction, veterinary care, and a tremendous amount of daily attention. Think of having an incredibly smart, mischievous toddler… for the next couple of decades. 😅🐒

Access to appropriate veterinary care is also something prospective primate owners need to consider. Cedar Hill Animal Clinic is currently the only veterinary practice in Ohio providing care for non-human primates, which means some of our primate families travel quite a distance to see us.

We're so glad Daisy's family made the trip and trusted us with her care. We can't wait to watch this sweet girl grow! 💕

🐾 Happy National Dog Day! 🐾

We're celebrating with one of our very sweet patients, Atlas! 🖤

Dr. Johnson has had the pleasure of watching Atlas grow over the last few months — and judging by these pictures, there has been a LOT of growing happening. 😂 From a little puppy face to those long legs, he's changing right before our eyes!

Whenever possible, we love keeping our patients with the same veterinarian throughout their care. It gives our doctors the opportunity to truly get to know each patient — their personality, their history, what's normal for them — while also building a relationship with the people who know and love them best. ❤️

That continuity becomes even more valuable as our patients grow and their needs change throughout every stage of life. And, of course, it means our doctors get the added bonus of watching puppies like Atlas grow up. 🥹

Happy National Dog Day to Atlas and ALL of the wonderful dogs we're lucky enough to care for every day! 🐶💕

🐾 Everybody say hello to sweet little Monroe! 🐾

Monroe recently came to Cedar Hill for her very first vet visit at just 1.96 pounds of pure kitten cuteness. 🥹💕 And yes… we were all immediately obsessed.

First kitten visits are an important start to a lifetime of good health! During these early appointments, we get to make sure our newest patients are growing appropriately, perform a full nose-to-tail exam, discuss vaccines and parasite prevention, and answer all of the questions that come along with bringing home a new kitten. 🩺🐱

But arguably our most important responsibility? Lots of snuggles and making sure their first experience at the vet is a positive one. We take that job VERY seriously. 😂

Monroe was such a sweet girl for her first visit, and we can't wait to watch this tiny girl grow! 💜

👑 Everyone, meet Princess Toby! 👑

Princess Toby is a 17-week-old Virginia opossum who recently made the trip to Cedar Hill for a wellness exam — and we are officially obsessed with her. 🥹

This was only her second trip outside of her home, but you would never know it! Princess Toby was an absolute sweetheart for her exam and received a glowing report from Dr. Headlee. She is growing beautifully, maintaining an ideal body and muscle condition, and appears to be a very healthy young opossum. 🩺💕

Her visit also gave us a great opportunity to talk about one of the MOST important parts of raising a young opossum: nutrition! 🍎🥦🐛

Virginia opossums are omnivores, and their nutritional needs are a little more complicated than simply offering fruits and meat. A varied diet with plenty of vegetables, appropriate amounts of fruit and animal protein, and careful attention to the calcium-to-phosphorus balance is especially important while they're growing.

Why does that matter? Maintaining proper nutrition helps prevent metabolic bone disease, a serious condition we unfortunately can see in captive opossums when their diet isn't appropriately balanced.

Princess Toby's family has clearly done their homework and put a tremendous amount of thought into giving her the best possible care. ❤️ We discussed some small adjustments as she continues to grow, along with enrichment, future preventive care, and eventually planning for her spay around 6 months of age.

And a fun opossum fact from her visit: there are currently no routine vaccines approved for captive Virginia opossums, so preventive care looks a little different for these guys than it does for our dogs and cats!

For now, Princess Toby gets to head home, keep growing, explore her upgraded enclosure, and continue living up to her very appropriate royal title. 👑😂

🐢 A little beak maintenance for our friend Bob!

Meet Bob, a 3-year-old Hermann's tortoise who recently visited us for a beak trim! 💚

Did you know that a tortoise's beak grows continuously? In the wild, normal eating and foraging behaviors help naturally wear the beak down. In our pet tortoises, sometimes that natural wear isn't quite enough, which can lead to an overgrown or uneven beak.

Diet, the types and textures of foods offered, opportunities for natural grazing and foraging, and other individual factors can all play a role in how a tortoise's beak wears over time.

When a beak becomes too long, it can eventually make it more difficult for a tortoise to properly grasp and eat food — which is where a little veterinary pedicure for the face comes in. 😂🐢

Beak trims are something we perform fairly regularly for our tortoise patients at Cedar Hill. For Bob's comfort and safety, his trim was performed while he was under light sedation, allowing our team to carefully reshape his beak without unnecessary stress or movement.

And just like that… Bob was looking sharp again. ✨🐢

Regular veterinary exams are a great opportunity to monitor your tortoise's beak, shell, weight, diet, husbandry, and overall health — sometimes the little things can tell us a lot!

🐰 Binky would like to help us introduce one of the newest faces at Cedar Hill — meet Tabitha! 💙

Tabitha joined our team as a Veterinary Assistant and has quickly settled right in! She comes to us with a few years of experience in veterinary medicine… but her career path before that might surprise you. 👀

Before entering vet med, Tabitha earned her degree in Criminal Justice and worked as a private investigator! 🔎 After some time in the field, she ultimately decided that working with animals was where she was meant to be — and we're pretty glad she did. 🥰

Originally from North Carolina, Tabitha is currently completing her pre-medicine coursework with hopes of applying to veterinary school in the future. 🩺🐾

In the short time she's been with us, Tabitha has already proven to be incredibly sweet, eager to learn, and quick to adapt to the way we do things here at Cedar Hill. She's jumped right in with our patients and team, and we're very thankful to have her as part of the Cedar Hill family!
