⭐️BREED OF THE WEEK⭐️

This is Minnie, a 7 year old Dutch Shepherd 🤎

The Dutch Shepherd came from the rural farming regions of the Netherlands in the 1800s. Bred as versatile farm dogs, they were efficient at herding sheep and cattle, pulling carts, hunting vermin and protecting their land. This breed is powerful, athletic, intelligent, and incredibly loyal. Now, Dutch Shepherds are typically seen in police and military work, search and rescue, and are strong competitors in many dog sports. Dutch Shepherds are a higher energy breed and thrive when regularly exercised or given a job💪🏼

Dutch Shepherds come in 3 coat varieties; long haired, rough haired and short haired (like Minnie!) Their grooming needs are fairly low maintenance. Regular baths, desheds and nail trims keep them feeling their absolute best🫧

⭐️BREED OF THE WEEK⭐️

This is Indy, a 2 year old American Cocker Spaniel🤍

Cocker Spaniels were developed in 1800’s England and were bred to be bird hunting dogs. They specifically were known for hunting woodcock birds, giving them the name Cocker Spaniel! This breed was first recognized by the AKC in 1878 and in the 1940’s split into two breeds; American Cocker Spaniel and English Cocker Spaniel. They have a reputation of being extremely affectionate and social, Indy’s mom describes him as “cuddly”🥰

Cocker Spaniels are personally one of my favorite breeds to groom! In show, they are trimmed shorter on their head/body/back but the ears/chest/belly/legs are left long and flowy. Many pet parents opt for shorter, low maintenance cuts like Indy here! They have super thick coats so this helps keep them feeling their best during warmer months 🫧

Fun fact! Cocker Spaniels have been voted AKC’s #1 breed for 23 years! They became very popular family pets after Disney’s Lady and the Tramp movie🐶

⭐️BREED OF THE WEEK⭐️

This is Coco, a 7 year old Brittany🧡

This breed originated in the 1800’s in the Brittany region of France. Brittany’s were developed as all purpose bird dogs because of their athleticism, agility, high energy and natural pointing skills. Today, Brittany’s excel in bird hunting, field trials, agility, dock diving and are excellent hiking companions and family pets🥾

Compared to other sporting breeds, Brittany’s are relatively moderate maintenance. They have dense but fine, slightly wavy fur so regular brushing helps keep their coat free of tangles and debris. Their coats are feathered on their chest, legs and belly and they typically get a deshed and tidy trim during their service! Paw pad shaving, regular baths and nail trims help keep them feeling their best and many owners like to request a cleaner, tidier trim during warmer months🫧

Fun fact! Brittany’s were recognized by the AKC in 1934 as the “Brittany Spaniel” but in 1982 they dropped spaniel from the name. This is because this breed tends to work more like a pointer/ setter than a classic spaniel!

⭐️BREED OF THE WEEK⭐️

This is Frank, a 9 year old Beagle🤎

Beagles originated in England and were developed as scent hounds for tracking small game, specifically rabbits/hares. They have amazing noses and strong prey drive making them perfect companions for hunters. Beagles are still commonly used as hunting hounds and have also developed their own sport, beagling. This breed was recognized by the AKC in 1885 and the first licensed AKC Beagle field trial was held in 1890. In these field trials, the dogs work in packs to track rabbits by scent and are judged by endurance, cooperation, voice, speed and accuracy. They earn points at these field trials and the best of these dogs become Field Champion Gun Dogs, like Frank!🐰🏆

Beagles don’t require extensive grooming aside from nail trims and regular baths, they are prone to that “hound” smell! Their big floppy ears can also trap moisture and debris making them more prone to ear infections, so regular cleaning helps keep them feeling their best! 🫧

⭐️BREED OF THE WEEK⭐️

Meet Hershey, a 3 year old English Bulldog 🤎

This breed originated in England and was originally developed for bull baiting, a historical sport that was outlawed in the 1800’s. These dogs were fearless, determined, strong and incredibly driven. When bull baiting was outlawed, English Bulldog lovers at the time were faced with a choice, let the breed go extinct or completely reshape it. They were selectively bred over time into the goofy, affectionate, and loyal companions we know and love today. 🐂

Aside from regular baths, desheds, and nail trims, English Bulldogs require a bit of extra attention on their face folds. They need to be regularly cleaned to avoid gunk build up, irritation, and keeping them feeling (and smelling) their best!🫧

English Bulldogs, like many bulldogs, are a brachycephalic (short snouted) breed. This causes them to be a little extra sensitive to heat, humidity, excitement and stress. Keeping them cool during warmer months is crucial ☀️

Fun fact!
English bulldogs were one of the first breeds recognized by the AKC in 1886, just 2 years after its formation in 1884.

⭐️BREED OF THE WEEK⭐️

Meet ZZ, a 6 year old Portuguese Podengo Pequeno 🩶

Podengos are native to Portugal and come in 3 sizes: pequeno (small), médio (medium), and grande (large). They also come in two coat types, wire or smooth! Podengo Pequenos were originally developed to be rabbit hunting dogs due to their high energy, strong prey drive, independence, and cleverness. Now, Podengo Pequenos excel in agility and Fast CAT competitions in the dog sports world. Despite being an ancient breed, the Podengo Pequeno was not recognized by the AKC until 2013 where they were put in the Hound group🐇

Podengos’ grooming needs are fairly simple. The smooth coated variety needs regular baths and nail trims. Wire coated Podengos, like ZZ, are traditionally shown in their natural state with only minimal hand stripping to maintain the coats rough texture🫧

ZZ is a retired show dog!😍Podengos are a rare breed to see in the U.S., and I’m so thankful I got to meet her this week and practice my hand stripping skills!
