Vet Tech & Assistant Appreciation Week: Every Role Matters!

The person who brings your pet into our hospital or reunites you at discharge? They’re often a veterinary assistant, and their role goes far beyond those moments.

Today, we’re giving some well deserved love to our incredible Veterinary Assistants!

Much like a human hospital, our emergency and specialty hospital relies on professionals with distinct roles and responsibilities. Our veterinary technicians bring specialized medical knowledge and clinical skills to patient care, while veterinary assistants provide essential hands on support that helps our technicians and doctors deliver that care.

From safely handling and comforting patients to preparing treatment areas, assisting with procedures, and keeping things moving in a busy 24/7 hospital, our assistants contribute in ways clients may not always see.

To our veterinary assistants: We see how hard you work, how much you care, and all the little things you do that make a big difference. The patience you show a nervous pet, the extra hands you offer a coworker, and the compassion you bring to even the busiest shifts do not go unnoticed. We appreciate you more than you know!

We’re proud to celebrate both our veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants this week. Their roles are different, but their dedication to our patients and the families who trust us with them is something they share.

Great patient care takes all of us, and every role deserves recognition!

To our veterinary assistants and technicians: Thank you for the care, dedication, and heart you bring to our hospital every day. We’re lucky to have you!

Help us celebrate! Whether you’re a pet parent, primary care veterinary professional, or fellow team member, share a word of appreciation or give a shout out to someone who has made a difference. Let’s make sure the people behind the care know just how much they’re valued!

Some of the biggest hearts in veterinary medicine wear scrubs.

They are there for the emergencies, the recoveries, the heartbreaking moments, and the victories that remind us why we do what we do.

They comfort frightened patients, support worried families, stand alongside our doctors during challenging cases, and lift each other up when the days get tough.

They are the steady hands, compassionate hearts, and reassuring voices that make such a difference in a hospital where no two days are ever the same.

This National Veterinary Technician Week, we’re proudly celebrating the incredible veterinary technicians and veterinary assistants at VCA Veterinary Referral & Emergency Center of Westbury.

We know this work isn’t always easy. We see the long hours, the emotional investment, the dedication, and the countless little things you do that may never make it into a medical record but mean everything to the patients, families, and colleagues who count on you.

You are valued. You are appreciated. And you make a difference in more lives than you’ll ever know.

To our technicians and assistants: Thank you for the knowledge and skill you bring, the compassion you share, and the unwavering support you give to our patients, clients, doctors, and one another.

This week is about YOU, and we couldn’t be prouder to celebrate you!

Itchy pets, new treatments, and better care through collaboration!

🎃 Team VREC Westbury Takes on a Scream Park! 👻

Screams, laughs, and a little friendly competition over who was the most scared!

Our Hospital Director, Amanda, organized a night of spooky fun at a Scream Park, bringing team members from across VREC Westbury together for some unforgettable moments outside the hospital!

When you’re part of a 24/7 emergency and specialty hospital, schedules don’t always align, so getting together for a night like this makes it even more special.

Different departments, different shifts, one amazing team! Whether we’re tackling a busy day at the hospital or running from jump scares, we’re always better together! 🐾

Investing in the Next Generation of Veterinary Technicians!

As we prepare to celebrate National Veterinary Technician Week, we’re excited to welcome Giuseppe, a veterinary technician extern from Long Island University (LIU), to our team!

Giuseppe will be working alongside our emergency and specialty teams through December, gaining valuable clinical experience and learning from the dedicated professionals who care for our patients every day.

In New York State, becoming a Licensed Veterinary Technician (LVT) requires specialized education, clinical training, and successful completion of a national examination. Behind those three letters is a commitment to knowledge, skill, and exceptional patient care.

The future of veterinary medicine depends on the professionals we invest in today.

We’re proud to support students like Giuseppe as they take the next steps toward becoming licensed veterinary professionals.

Please join us in welcoming Giuseppe to the VREC Westbury team!

Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

Please help us give a warm welcome to Sofia!

Sofia is joining VREC Westbury as a Veterinary Technician Extern and will be with us through December, gaining hands on experience alongside our emergency and specialty teams.

An externship is an opportunity to take what’s learned in the classroom and see it come to life in a hospital setting from patient care and clinical skills to communication, collaboration, and everything that happens behind the scenes.

We love being part of the journey for future veterinary professionals and giving students like Sofia the opportunity to learn, ask questions, build confidence, and experience specialty and emergency medicine firsthand.

We’re so happy to have you with us, Sofia welcome to VREC Westbury!

Meet Our Newest Graduate: Apollo!

Some graduations deserve an extra celebration.

Apollo was diagnosed with large cell lymphoma and has been receiving Tanovea® as part of his treatment with Dr. Linderman, our board certified oncologist, and the VREC Westbury Oncology team.

He recently reached a pretty special milestone graduation day!

And of course, Apollo couldn’t celebrate without Carla, one of our Oncology Assistants, by his side. Cancer treatment can mean multiple visits over time, and those visits often create some pretty special relationships between our patients and the people caring for them. We think Apollo’s smile says it all.

Did you know? Lymphoma is one of the cancers treated by veterinary oncologists, and treatment recommendations are individualized based on the type of lymphoma, the patient and their overall health. Tanovea® is one treatment option used for certain dogs with lymphoma.

For pet owners, a cancer diagnosis can bring a lot of questions. For our referring veterinary partners, our Oncology team is here to work alongside you and your clients from diagnosis and treatment planning through the milestones worth celebrating.

🎓 Help us congratulate Apollo on his graduation in the comments!

Please join us in welcoming Christine to the VREC Westbury team!

Christina is joining us as one of our newest Client Service Representatives (CSRs) and will be one of the friendly faces helping support our clients, patients, and referring veterinary partners.

Our Client Service team plays an important role in the VREC Westbury experience from helping pet owners navigate their visit to supporting communication and coordination with our referring veterinary community.

We’re excited to have Christine on board and look forward to seeing her grow as part of our team. If you see her during your next visit, be sure to say hello!

Welcome to VREC Westbury, Christine!
