Please join us in congratulating Dr. Claire Weigand on her last day with Integrity Veterinary Center as she begins an exciting new chapter, having accepted a telemedicine position with IDEXX.

It has been an honor to work alongside Dr. Weigand. Her knowledge, dedication, and experience will truly be missed by everyone at IVC. Over her 35 years in clinical practice, she has treated thousands of pets—an incredible accomplishment!

A New Hope for Cats with Oral Cancer 🐾🐈️

A serious and aggressive cancer called squamous cell carcinoma (SCC) can develop in cats’ mouths, including the tongue, gums, and lips. This cancer is very difficult to treat, and current treatment options are often limited.

Researchers are now testing a promising new type of cancer treatment called LTN immunotherapy, which helps the body’s immune system fight cancer. In studies with horses that had the same type of cancer, this treatment showed strong results with very few side effects.

This study will evaluate whether LTN immunotherapy is safe and effective for cats with oral SCC. Cats enrolled in the study will receive 4 injections directly into the tumor, given once every 3 weeks.

Researchers will closely monitor:
🐈️ If tumors shrink
🐾 Whether the cancer spreads into nearby bone,
🐾 How the immune system responds to treatment, and
🐾 Any side effects reported by owners.

To track these changes, the study will use physical exams, CT scans, owner questionnaires, and tumor biopsies. This study is entitled "Lipid Nanoparticle Immunotherapy for Treatment of Oral Squamous Cell Carcinoma in Cats." The research team consists of some of CSU's brightest cancer researchers, including Drs. Kate Vickery, Kristen Weishaar, Jennifer Rawlinson, Naomi Hoyer, Lyndah Chow, Emma Mangold, Jade Kurihara, and Steven Dow.

If successful, this treatment could offer a much-needed new option for cats facing this challenging form of oral cancer.
