Today was one of those days that reminds us why we do what we do — and why sometimes this job is heartbreaking.
We had a dog come into the salon today in one of the worst conditions we have ever seen. He was severely matted to the point where the hair on his legs was restricting movement and circulation. He was covered in urine and f***s and clearly very uncomfortable and defeated. We groom dogs that have come from the streets, from the south, from rescue situations — and I can honestly say this was worse than many of those cases.
This is the part of grooming people don’t see. Grooming is not just haircuts and bows. Sometimes it is animal advocacy. Sometimes it is doing the uncomfortable thing and making difficult phone calls because the dog cannot speak for itself.
We did contact Animal Control because our responsibility will always be the health, safety, and humane treatment of the dogs that come through our doors. That is not something we take lightly, and it is never done out of spite or anger — only out of concern for the animal.
I also offered today to take the dog myself so he could get the care and maintenance he needs, and told them they would not even have to return to the shop if they chose to surrender him. When she arrived, she was open to the idea but said I needed to speak with her father-in-law because he is very attached to the dog. When I spoke with him, he became very irate and angry.. even went as far as to threaten me on the phone. After that conversation, she decided not to surrender him. I want to make it clear that we truly tried to advocate for this dog and do what we felt was best for him.
The hardest part of the day was when the owner came to pick up ...Every groomer knows this moment — when dogs hear their owners’ voices and they get excited, wagging, pulling, trying to run to them. This dog did the opposite. He hid behind us. He did not want to go. He stayed pressed against us and would not go to her. That was absolutely heartbreaking to watch. We all ended up in tears after they left.
This dog deserved better. Every dog deserves better.
I also want to add that Animal Control is taking this situation very seriously and will be following up in person to see the conditions.
To our clients who keep their dogs on schedules, brush them, care for them, and treat them like family — thank you. You are the reason we get to do the fun part of our job most days.
But please remember this:
Matting is not just cosmetic. Matting is pain. Matting can cut off circulation. Matting can cause sores, infections, and long-term damage. Grooming is not optional for many breeds — it is part of their basic care and wellbeing.
