Chocolate contains theobromine and caffeine, and dark, semi-sweet and baking chocolate are far more concentrated than milk chocolate, so risk depends on the type, the amount and your pet's weight. Lilies are a particular danger to cats: every part of the plant, including the pollen and the water in the vase, can cause kidney injury, and even a small exposure is an emergency. Antifreeze has a sweet taste that draws pets in and can cause kidney failure. Rodenticides come in several types with very different effects, which is why the package matters. Wild mushrooms vary widely, and some are severely toxic.

Emergency steps: remove your pet from the source, prevent further access, and keep the wrapper, bottle or a photo of the product. Do not induce vomiting or give milk, home remedies or human medication unless a veterinarian or poison control professional directs you to. Call us right away rather than waiting for signs, because many of these toxins do damage before your pet looks sick.

Fall is the worst time for fleas, so keep veterinarian-recommended flea, tick and heartworm prevention going year-round. Parasites are the one exception to our kindness for all creatures, because they cause real suffering.

Tell us in the comments about a toxin scare you have had with your pet. Your story might be the one that saves someone else's.

A cat who eats like a horse and still gets thinner is not just getting older, and that combination deserves a look.

A huge appetite with weight loss is one of the classic signs of feline hyperthyroidism, one of the most common conditions we diagnose in cats over 10. About 1 in 10 older cats will develop it, and in the great majority of cases the cause is a benign enlargement of the thyroid gland.

Other clues owners brush off: night yowling, restlessness, drinking and urinating more, vomiting or softer stools, a greasy or matted coat, and a racing heartbeat. Some cats instead seem tired and weak. Here is the part that catches people out: a normal T4 does not rule it out, because thyroid levels drift downward with age, so a senior cat sitting at the high end of normal may still be hyperthyroid. That is why trends matter more than any single number, and why we check blood pressure too, since roughly 15 to 20 percent of hyperthyroid cats are hypertensive. We also check kidney values before and during treatment, because treating the thyroid can unmask kidney disease it was hiding.

It is very manageable with daily medication, an iodine-restricted prescription diet or, in some cases, surgery. If your cat is over 10, we recommend bloodwork, a urine sample and a blood pressure check twice a year.

Fall is the worst time for fleas, so keep veterinarian-recommended flea, tick and heartworm prevention going year-round: our annual heartworm test also screens for Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis, and most preventives cover intestinal parasites too. Parasites are the one exception to our kindness for all creatures, because they cause real suffering.

Tell us in the comments how you first noticed something was off with your cat, or if you want advice about how to talk to your vet about the thyroid testing.

Tiny parasites. Big problems. 🐾

Year-round prevention helps protect your pet from fleas, ticks, heartworm, and intestinal parasites, and remember, some can affect people too.

Roundworms and hookworms are zoonotic, certain tapeworms can infect people, and some Giardia strains have zoonotic potential. That is the part owners most often miss: parasite prevention is not only about your pet's comfort, it is about protecting your whole household.

Stay consistent. Stay protected. 💙

Not sure which preventative is right for your pet? Our veterinarians at Adams County Veterinary Services in West Union, Ohio can help guide you toward the best option based on your pet's age, lifestyle, health, and exposure risk. Our annual heartworm test also screens for Lyme disease, ehrlichiosis, and anaplasmosis, and most preventives cover intestinal parasites as well. Fall is the worst time for fleas, but parasites stay active year-round, and they remain our one exception to kindness for all creatures, because they cause real suffering.

October is National Pet Wellness Month. A good time to say the quiet part out loud: an annual exam is not just a shot visit.

A true nose-to-tail exam includes body weight and condition, muscle, hydration, gum color, heart and lungs, abdominal palpation, lymph nodes, eyes, ears, mouth, skin, coat, nails, pads, gait and a brief neurologic check. By age 3, roughly 80% of dogs and 70% of cats have periodontal disease. Comparing this year's weight with last year's can also reveal important changes early.

Testing depends on age, lifestyle and risk. F***l testing checks for intestinal parasites and giardia. Dogs need annual heartworm testing, often with screening for Lyme, ehrlichiosis and anaplasmosis. Vaccines and parasite prevention should match how your pet actually lives.

Pets age faster than people realize. By age two, they are roughly 24 in human years, then add about four to five human years for each calendar year. Cats may hide kidney disease, and dogs can hide masses or arthritis, so senior pets often benefit from full exams twice a year.

Adams County Veterinary Services in West Union, Ohio offers complete exams at general practitioner prices, with in-house bloodwork, urinalysis, f***l testing, imaging and surgery, backed by Dr. Dan Meakin's 37+ years of experience.

Fall is the worst time for fleas. Continue veterinarian-recommended flea, tick and heartworm prevention year-round. Our one exception to kindness for all creatures is parasites, which cause real suffering.

What is the one thing you always ask about at your pet's exam?
