🦜❤️💛💙 Bird Spotlight: Meet Kiwi the Scarlet Macaw! 💙💛❤️

We had the pleasure of meeting Kiwi for a wellness exam at Southview Animal Hospital! We loved seeing this colorful bird and wanted to share some fun facts about scarlet macaws!

Did you know?
- They use their feet to hold food like little hands!
- Their strong beaks can crack open hard nuts.
- They often form long-term bonds with their partners.
- They're native to the tropical forests of Central and South America.
- They can live for 40–50 years or even longer and Kiwi is 22!

Scarlet macaws are intelligent, social birds known for their vibrant feathers, big personalities, and VERY big voices! They also need specialized care, plenty of enrichment, and a lifelong commitment from their caregivers.

✨ Meet Celeste! ✨

Meet Celeste, the adorable feline companion of our CSR, Ashley!

Celeste got her name simply because Ashley thought it suited her perfectly—and we have to agree! She is just 6 months old and came from Ashley’s family farm.

Celeste is happy, healthy, and has no health issues… although she does have one tiny problem: some seriously stinky p**p! 💩

Fun fact: Celeste goes absolutely CRAZY for spring toys and tunnels!

Cool weather doesn’t mean tick season is over!

Minnesota ticks can stay active even when temperatures drop into the 30s, which means your pet may still be exposed during walks, hunting, hiking, or simply playing in the backyard. Ticks can transmit diseases to pets, including Lyme disease and anaplasmosis.

Minnesota pet tip: Keep your pet protected year-round so an unexpected warm fall or winter day doesn’t mean an unexpected tick bite!

✨ Meet Dr. Andrea Biancalana! ✨

We’re excited to welcome Dr. Andrea Biancalana to the Southview Animal Hospital team! Dr. Biancalana joined Southview in 2026 after relocating from her hometown of Chicago, Illinois.

She earned her Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 2024. Before making the move to Minnesota, she practiced both exotic companion animal and small animal medicine throughout the Chicagoland area.

During veterinary school, Dr. Biancalana gained experience in a variety of areas, including volunteering at the Dane County Wildlife Center, conducting breast cancer research, and completing externships at the Milwaukee County Zoo, Belize Zoo, and Brookfield Zoo Chicago. She is also a member of the Association of Exotic Mammal Veterinarians (AEMV).

Her favorite parts of veterinary medicine include exotic animal care and husbandry, soft tissue surgery, and building strong, trusting relationships with patients and their families. She especially loves working with turtles, tortoises, and cats!

When she’s not at the hospital, Dr. Biancalana enjoys:

🎶 Going to concerts
🍳 Trying new recipes
✈️ Traveling with her partner, Alex
🐱 Spending time with her two cats, Fred and George

Urgent Care: September Month in Review 🍂🐾

September brought a change in seasons and another busy month for our urgent care department!

We were proud to provide care 7 days a week, helping pets get the attention they needed when unexpected illnesses and injuries happened.

From upset stomachs and injuries to ear infections, allergies, and other urgent concerns, our team was here to help.
