📌 Let’s Talk: Hypoglycemia in Puppies ,What Every New Puppy Parent Should Know 🐾
Bringing home a new puppy is exciting, but it’s also a big adjustment for them, new smells, new people, and a brand new routine. For tiny breeds like Yorkies & Chihuahuas, hypoglycemia (low blood sugar) is one of the most common issues during this transition.
And it’s not just Yorkies
Hypoglycemia is very common in all tiny toy breeds, including Maltese, Pomeranians, Poodles and more. These small but mighty babies need extra attention and care as they adjust to their new homes.
It’s not uncommon. It’s not a sign of sickness. But it is something you must be prepared for..
💡 What Is Hypoglycemia?
Hypoglycemia is a drop in blood sugar that can happen quickly, especially in small, young puppies during times of transition, transport, stress, excitement, missed meals, or even too much playtime. Puppies burn through energy fast, and if they aren’t eating or resting properly, that’s when issues can appear.
Important:
This is not a “sick puppy.” Hypoglycemia doesn’t mean the puppy came home unhealthy, it means they need help managing the transition.
The good news? It’s easily treatable if caught early..
🐶 Prevention Starts at Home:‼️
• Feed your puppy 3–4 small meals a day, spaced out consistently.
• Make sure they are actually eating ,not just leaving food in the bowl. Hand-feed or mix wet food if needed.
• Fresh water should always be available. You can even add a bit of Karo syrup to their water for the first few days.
• Use Nutri-Cal, Dyne, or a high-calorie supplement at least once or twice daily ,, especially first thing in the morning and before bed.
• Don’t overdo playtime. Puppies can crash fast if they’re overstimulated.
• Avoid overhandling or handling your puppy too roughly, they’re fragile and can easily become stressed.
• Set up a playpen where your puppy can rest and feel safe,, it helps them avoid energy crashes and creates a peaceful routine.
• Avoid long outings or stressful events (like shopping trips or loud gatherings) during the first few weeks at home.
🚨 Early Signs to Watch For:
• Lethargy or sudden tiredness
• Weakness or wobbling
• Shaking, trembling, or chills
• Disinterest in food
• Glassy eyes or staring off
• Gums pale in color
• In severe cases: seizures or unresponsiveness
💬 What To Do Immediately:
If you notice these symptoms:
1. Stay calm.
2. Rub Nutri-Cal, Karo syrup, or honey on the gums.
3. Keep them WARM and comfortable.
4. Offer soft food or wet food once they’re alert. You can also offer egg or boiled chciken.
5. Call me or your vet immediately if symptoms do not improve or you’re unsure.
