Luke is a young adolescent Bullmastiff who unfortunately has had more surgeries in his young life than many dogs have had their entire lifetime due to having many congenital defects. From issues with his nose, palate, and more to surgery on both elbows, and additional procedures to consider… he has not been able to have a “normal” puppyhood. But fortunately, he has owners who are incredibly understanding and committed to him.

After being in physical rest for so long, he is finally able to enjoy having freedom in his beautiful backyard. And since it’s been a newer privilege for him to have that back in his routine, I made the suggestion that we begin working on a recall in the backyard right away.

You can see that physically he is a little slow to get back to us as a result of all of his medical conditions, however, his enthusiasm and compliance is still there!

I love when clients get creative with the messages that they put in their payments 😂 but in all seriousness - SO MUCH of working with behavioral problems is figuring out what works for that individual dog + that individual dog in that specific environment.

Behavior work is not cookie cutter - a lot needs to be customized in each case. Figuring it out is part of every day and requires creativity, thinking outside the box, and an openness to occasionally doing things differently. And that’s part of the fun.

23 years ago today I started working with shelter dogs - not just regular shelter dogs, but the ones that others ignored, shunned, or disregarded. The ones that nobody liked. The ones that everyone thought were “mean.”

After everything I’ve been through in my life, it has become very clear that I find value in the things that the average person does not.

As a good friend of mine texted me today in honor of my birthday, she said:

“Here's to the woman who knows that even the shadows have something beautiful to teach us, and that the wild is not always something to tame, but something to understand.”

And I think that describes my philosophy of life (both in my career as well as in my personal life) as perfectly as my essence truly is.

Here’s to many more years full of RotNDogs and the people who love them.

As a dog trainer who specializes in aggression, fear, and anxiety there’s a lot to this profession that you don’t see directly on the outside.

You don’t always see the long back and forth exchanges of support in between appointments.

You don’t always see the time spent confirming with clients, returning inquires, changing schedules, and reviewing questionnaires.

You don’t always see the hours sitting in continuing education.

You don’t always see the late night phone calls talking clients off the ledge when they are ready to give up on their dog.

You don’t always see the communication with veterinarians so that way everyone can work as a team.

There’s a lot more to this career than just showing up for appointments. And I wouldn’t have it any other way. Because often times it’s the things that you don’t see, that build the things you see.

MUZZLE MONDAY: Muzzles don’t inhibit behavior as much as some professionals would like to make you think. Dogs will absolutely still attempt to bite while muzzled, within the veterinary setting, during training exercises, and in the normal home environment.

While, it’s possible that a muzzle may inhibit *some* dogs, it’s important not to make that a generalized statement towards all dogs.

I always have discussions with my clients around why we need to do muzzle + behavior modification where indicated… because the muzzle itself does not change behavior.

If it really were that easy for muzzles to create desired behavior change (as in, the dog stops displaying aggression) then muzzles would put behavior consultants out of business. Thus far that hasn’t been the case so I think that’s pretty clear proof!

When progress exceeds expectations!

Odie and Reese were originally living in two separate households. Their family attempted to introduce them multiple times, which unfortunately resulted in them fighting with one another. It got so bad that as soon as they would even see each other, they both would begin to display aggression - before even getting close. So they just gave up.

But due to family changes, at some point it became necessary for them to live under the same roof and everyone was quite upset about how that was going to happen.

During our initial session, one of the owners stated: “We don’t need them to become best friends and wear matching pajamas. We just need them to tolerate each other and coexist safely in the household.”

Fast forward to today, the family has put in the time and effort to work with each dog individually and then together. We had a very intentional re-introduction plan with a lot of steps, but all do-able despite everything else the family had to deal with as well. And it has paid off.

Today, snuggling between the dogs is a regular occurrence. In a recent text the same owner who made the above comment, stated: “We’re almost ready for matching pajamas.” And then this photo came a few days after. I think we’re more than ready!

When owners are committed to their family members and agree to put in the work, great things can happen where we can be pleasantly surprised with surpassing our original goals.

When you get 7 inquiries from your website in one day at RotNDog, it’s not about playing with cute happy dogs all day.

The 7 submissions I received in one day included an Australian Cattle Dog displaying aggression to family members with a bite history; a mixed breed displaying aggression; a German Shepherd displaying aggression to other dogs with a bite history; an Italian Greyhound mix displaying aggression to other dogs; a Cane Corso displaying aggression; a Malamute displaying aggression to owners with a bite history; and an English Bulldog displaying aggression to other animals in the household with a bite history.

4 of the 7 listed a bite history but that doesn’t mean the other 3 don’t have one.

All of these cases are what most training professionals would look at as a nightmare. And yet, I look at them and think - let’s help your dog, your family, and the public stay safe while reducing stress and improving overall quality of life.

People who struggle with their dog’s behavior challenges are not alone.

This year I had the opportunity and privilege to return to Peru, for a second time. The culture surrounding dogs there is completely different from what we have created here in the US.

Most dogs in Peru are free roaming, meaning that they are not kept in houses or yards all day. So many of my friends, colleagues, and clients respond with sadness and frustration to see photographs of these free roaming dogs and what their lives may be like as “strays”. But observing them has completely changed my own perspective and opinion on their existence.

While of course, there is an occasional dog that is skinny or maybe suffering from skin issues or injuries, these dogs appear wholly relaxed, calm, and content in their life of total autonomy.

They move about freely, choosing who they want to interact with and who they don’t, with no restrictions and no forcing them to be what they are not. I could count on one hand the number of leashes I saw in a 10 day period. It’s pretty clear to see that the fewer the leashes, the fewer displays of aggression. This was such a stark contrast to how we live with dogs here, full of limitations, restrictions, and little to no autonomy.

It was a really beautiful thing to just see everyone coexist: people and dogs together, without physical barriers and limitations.

Our own negative beliefs stemming from the culture we were raised in can blind us from being able to see other perspectives if we are not careful. I’m grateful for my time in Peru and being able to see a completely different side of the species that we love so much.

I will definitely be sharing more on the dogs that I had the privilege of observing in my travels the last few years.

Nature is the true self.

Everything in our current reality is a construct. Money, jobs, taxes, etc. Even the way our culture views dogs as property, keeps them inside of the four walls of our homes, keeps them on leash, etc.

Our life is far removed from where nature intended us to be. Some may call it progress, but from a different perspective, we have very much regressed from what is real: nature.

Spending more time in nature is not only beneficial for our dogs, it is beneficial for us as well. The more often you can walk amongst the true self together, the better.

Happy October.

When you tell your clients that you’re vegan and complain about having to handle things like chicken, hotdogs, and cheese as a dog trainer and then the next time you show up they have a bunch of vegetarian dog treats for you to use with their dog instead !

😂😂😂

I feel seen and appreciated. 🙏🏽
