Today is World Ocean Day! 🌊

Saving the ocean can feel like an impossibly large task reserved for scientists and policymakers. But the ocean doesn't need a select few doing everything. It needs all of us doing something, anything. Take a couple of minutes during your lunch break to learn what a zoo, a sea turtle rehabilitation center, a coral restoration organization, and a dive shop were able to pull off a few weeks ago.

Here is what you can do:
1. Use mineral sunscreens that do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, OR consider swapping the sunscreen for a sunshirt when recreating near the reef.

2. Plant native species that require little to no fertilizers. Those chemicals find their way to the ocean and provide too many nutrients for organisms like algae.

3. Become an active participant in local issues! Stay up to date on legislative actions and environmental impacts that you do or do not support and let your voice be heard!

4. Support organizations with missions that align with conservation. This work does not get done without YOU!

Sydney was probably not your first guess, huh?

Male koalas produce a surprisingly deep bellowing grunt to communicate their size and dominance to other males in the area and attract potential mates. Females can vocalize this way too, though much less often, usually as a direct response to a nearby male. In this case, Ellin was far too busy to entertain Sydney’s flirting…😏

You have an appointment this weekend 🚨

Stop by Nature Play on May 30 and 31 from 10am - 12pm with your family's favorite plush or stuffed animal for a check-up from the Zoo’s Veterinary staff. Clinics like these are a great way to inspire kids and learn how we keep our animals happy and healthy. When your visit is over, head to the black bear habitat at 12pm to see bear boys Lewis and Clark and chat with the Zoologists that care for them.

Consider a friend for your friend! When you symbolically adopt a bear at the Zoo, you’re helping Palm Beach Zoo provide expert care, nutritious diets, and engaging enrichment for our animal residents, including our growing families.

Give Iggy a warm welcome this Memorial Day! 🦅 🇺🇸

Born in 2018, his full name is Ignace, a name given by John Ball Zoo staff after St. Ignace, Michigan. So, naturally, his nickname became "Iggy." He suffers from a chronic right-wing fracture and was deemed non-releasable. But he's receiving excellent care and enjoying his time with our zoologists as they work on strengthening their relationship with him. Our animal care team has shared that Iggy loves to eat and enjoys perching himself at elevated levels. And when you have a beak and feathers like those, can you blame him?

For now, Iggy and our other beautiful bald eagle resident, Noble Peace, will be splitting time on their habitat. Don't worry, we'll be sharing some ways you can help tell them apart, so stay tuned for that!
