Today is World Ocean Day! 🌊
Saving the ocean can feel like an impossibly large task reserved for scientists and policymakers. But the ocean doesn't need a select few doing everything. It needs all of us doing something, anything. Take a couple of minutes during your lunch break to learn what a zoo, a sea turtle rehabilitation center, a coral restoration organization, and a dive shop were able to pull off a few weeks ago.
Here is what you can do:
1. Use mineral sunscreens that do not contain oxybenzone and octinoxate, OR consider swapping the sunscreen for a sunshirt when recreating near the reef.
2. Plant native species that require little to no fertilizers. Those chemicals find their way to the ocean and provide too many nutrients for organisms like algae.
3. Become an active participant in local issues! Stay up to date on legislative actions and environmental impacts that you do or do not support and let your voice be heard!
4. Support organizations with missions that align with conservation. This work does not get done without YOU!
