Can we take a moment to appreciate this beautiful girl?! 😍 Selma stopped by West Palm Beach Veterinary Clinic for her wellness visit and to get some extra attention for her frequent ear infections. And yes… she absolutely stole our hearts while she was here! 🥹🐶

Recurring ear infections can be frustrating for pets and their families. Sometimes there’s more going on than just a dirty ear things like allergies, yeast or bacteria, moisture, and other underlying issues can contribute to repeated problems.

👂 Keep an eye out for:
🐾 Head shaking or scratching
🐾 Red or irritated ears
🐾 Unusual odor
🐾 Discharge or debris
🐾 Tenderness when the ears are touched

Regular wellness visits give us the opportunity to look for these problems early and work toward keeping those ears comfortable and healthy. 💙

One tiny tick can cause a BIG problem. 🕷️

Lyme disease is a tick-borne illness that can affect dogs of all shapes, sizes, and lifestyles and our adventurous pups who love hiking, hunting, camping, and exploring the outdoors may have even more opportunities to encounter ticks.

⚠️ Signs of Lyme disease can include:
🐾 Lameness or joint pain
🐾 Fever
🐾 Swollen lymph nodes
🐾 Decreased appetite
🐾 Lethargy
🐾 In more serious cases, kidney complications

And yes Florida dogs still need tick protection! 🌴 While Lyme disease is more common in certain parts of the country, ticks are present in Florida, and traveling with your dog can also increase their exposure risk.

The best defense starts with prevention. 💙 Regular tick prevention, checking your dog after outdoor adventures, appropriate testing, and discussing the Lyme vaccine with your veterinarian can all help keep your best friend protected.

🐱💙 KNOW THE DISEASE: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus (FIV) 💙🐱

FIV is a virus that affects a cat’s immune system, making it harder for their body to fight off infections. But an FIV-positive diagnosis does not mean a cat can’t live a happy, comfortable life. Many FIV-positive cats can live for years with proper veterinary care. 🐾

How does FIV spread?
FIV is primarily transmitted through deep bite wounds from an infected cat, which is why cats that roam outdoors and get into fights are at greater risk.

⚠️ Signs can include:
🐾 Recurring infections
🐾 Fever
🐾 Weight loss
🐾 Poor coat condition
🐾 Dental or gum disease
🐾 Enlarged lymph nodes
🐾 Decreased appetite

🧪 Testing matters!
A simple blood test can screen your cat for FIV. Testing is especially important for newly adopted cats, cats with unknown histories, and cats that have spent time outdoors.

🏡 Prevention is protection.
Keeping cats indoors or providing safe, supervised outdoor time can greatly reduce their risk of exposure. Unlike many of the diseases in our vaccine series, there is no FIV vaccine currently available in the United States, making prevention and testing especially important.

💙 And remember: FIV-positive cats deserve love, too! With regular wellness exams, good nutrition, an indoor lifestyle, and prompt treatment when they’re sick, many can enjoy wonderful lives.
