The way you say “hi” to a dog matters more than you might think. 👀🐕

Men and women often greet dogs very differently — from the way we move our bodies to the tone of voice we use. A deeper, lower-pitched “hi” can feel very different to a dog than the higher-pitched, softer, squeakier voice many women naturally use.

Add in posture, eye contact, movement and how directly we enter their space, and your dog is taking in a LOT of information before you’ve even finished saying hello.

There isn’t just one piece of communication happening here. Dogs are paying attention to the whole picture — what we say, how we say it, and what our body is doing while we say it. 🐾

Understanding those little differences can help us become much better communicators with our dogs.

A play bow doesn’t always mean “let’s play!” 👀

It’s easy to see a dog bow and assume they’re inviting another dog to play—but body language is all about context. What happened before the bow? What does the rest of the dog’s body look like? What happens immediately after?

One behavior doesn’t tell the whole story. Learning to read the entire dog, rather than one signal, can completely change how you understand their interactions. 🐾

A muzzle can make your dog’s world bigger. 🤍

If your dog needs a muzzle, getting past the stigma of how it looks can open up so much more of life for them—walks, hikes, adventures, new places, and experiences they may otherwise miss out on.

A muzzle doesn’t take away your dog’s freedom. When properly conditioned, it can be the tool that gives them more of it.

Your dog isn’t giving you a hard time - they’re having a hard time.

Reactivity is more than the barking, lunging, or pulling you see on the outside. Fear, frustration, over-arousal, accumulated stress, and even the tension we put into the leash can all play a role.

The goal isn’t a dog who never reacts. It’s a dog who has the skills, support, and guidance to recover, make better choices, and navigate the world with more confidence.

There’s no one “hack” for reactivity. It takes understanding the dog in front of you, building a system that works for them, and practicing it in real life.

Better dogs start with better understanding. 🤍

Kids + puppies = a whole lot of excitement

But moments like this are the perfect opportunity to teach everyone involved.

Helping kids understand when to engage, when to disengage, and how their actions affect a puppy’s behavior is just as important as teaching the puppy what we expect from them.

Training isn’t just about the dog — it’s about teaching the humans, too. Even the little ones!

We have all been there... our dog is doing something inappropriate & we end up yelling commands at them, to no avail.
The problem is owners try to direct their dog once they have entered an over aroused state of mind. Your dog is amped up by the environment, you are amped up yelling & the entire interaction is one BIG mess.

It is very difficult to communicate with an over aroused head space. Asking for a “sit” when your dog is already jumping up on your guest will likely do little to help your cause. However the root issue is NOT the fact your dog isn’t sitting. It’s the manner of the greeting... the energy & mental state which accompanies it. Instead of using obedience to address behavior problems, use obedience to affect levels of energy & state of mind. This will in turn help your behavior issues.

Back to our example of greetings. If we address our dog at the sound of the doorbell by sending them to “place”, it will immediately minimize arousal. Now you can answer the door without your dog repeating the unwanted behavior. Once your dog is calm, you can allow them to greet your guest & ask for a “sit” prior to receiving affection.

The root of the original behavior was never one of obedience. It was about lowering levels of arousal in order to make your dog successful. So the next time you find yourself yelling commands at your dog, ask yourself about your dog’s state of mind & how you can impact levels of arousal first.

Dog socialization isn’t just letting dogs “figure it out.” 🐾

Healthy interactions start with structure, guidance, and knowing when to step in. By keeping introductions controlled, interrupting inappropriate behaviors, and giving dogs breaks when needed, we can help them build confidence and learn better social skills.
