Struggling with the side pass?
Anyone can get a horse to slide sideways. That is not a correct side pass. A correct side pass means the horse moves cleanly away from the leg with proper diagonals and clear crossing of the legs. That requires a real foundation and advanced riding.
Most finished horses never develop a clean side pass. Very few can do it correctly at the canter.
In USA Working Equitation the Sidepass Rail is scored on the quality of the movement — calmness, crossing, fluidity, and correct positioning over the rail — not simply on getting across. Higher levels allow the canter, but correctness is still what is judged.
In my program, once I introduce an obstacle the horse should handle it with almost no help. I train for the higher scores, so once the horses are ready I canter the poles. That is how I work Rockstar — I do not walk him through them when he can do them correctly at the canter.
If you want a correct side pass, I can teach you or ride your horse for you.
