🦙 Animal Spotlight:
Meet Jewels, our 17-year-old alpaca here at Randall Oaks Zoo!

Jewels has called the zoo home since 2011. He resides across from our petting zoo with our two llamas Casper and Gracie. Jewels loves to sprawl out on the ground and sunbathe, roll around in his bedding, and munch on hay.

Just like llamas, alpacas are part of the Camelidae family. How are alpacas different from llamas? Simple, alpacas are smaller than llamas. On average, llamas can reach up to 47 inches at the shoulder and weigh 285 to 440 lbs. Alpacas are typically 32 to 39 inches at the shoulder and weigh 105 to 185 lbs.

Visit Randall Oaks Zoo from 1:15 to 1:45 daily to feed Jewels and his friends!

🐾We’re excited to introduce the newest member of our prairie dog family, Tumbleweed!

Tumbleweed was found wandering on her own in northwest Chicago, and was brought to Lost Woods Animal Sanctuary, where she received care and a safe place to stay. The team at Lost Woods reached out to us at Randall Oaks Zoo to see if Tumbleweed could join our existing prairie dog group.

We were happy to say YES!

Tumbleweed has now made her way to Randall Oaks Zoo and is getting acquainted with her new surroundings and staff. She will begin introductions to her new prairie dog family soon.

Prairie dogs are highly social animals, so having the opportunity to provide Tumbleweed with companionship and a place within an established group is especially meaningful to us.

We’re so grateful to Lost Woods Animal Sanctuary for caring for Tumbleweed and helping give her a second chance. We’re thrilled to be part of her next chapter!

Come visit Tumbleweed and her prairie dog family at Randall Oaks Zoo!

Welcome home, Tumbleweed! We’re so happy you’re here! 🐾
