This flea season is AWFUL!!! We have been getting calls daily from clients who have never had an issue before and are having trouble this year. We highly recommend using a monthly preventative year-round- our favorite is Simparica Trio (protects against fleas/ticks/heartworm/intestinal parasites.) We also like Nexgard (protects against fleas and ticks, you will need a separate heartworm preventative.)
If you notice you have fleas on your pets, you will need to treat your home- this is very important. Make sure to vacuum really well and wash all of your pets' bedding in hot water. You should repeat this every 2 weeks (minimum) for 3 months. Fleas can live/hatch in your environment for up to 3 months. You can wash your dog with an over the counter flea bath- NOT flea dip. We do not recommend washing cats with flea shampoo. If the infestation is really bad, they do sell over the counter flea bombs (again, you would do this every 2 weeks) or better yet, you can hire a pest company to do this.
Also, fleas carry tapeworms. If your pet has contracted fleas and is not on a monthly preventative, you may want to bring us a stool sample so we can make sure they have not been passed on to your pet.
