WHEW… it’s HOT out there 🥵☀️
And if you’re feeling the heat, your pets are feeling it even more.
Unlike humans, dogs can’t sweat through their skin to cool off. Instead, they rely mostly on panting and releasing heat through their paw pads and noses — which means they can overheat fast, especially during hot and humid Michigan days. 🐾
Flat-faced breeds like Pugs, French Bulldogs, and Bulldogs are at an even higher risk because they can’t pant as effectively. Senior pets, overweight pets, and pets with heart or lung disease also have a much harder time handling the heat.
Signs of heat exhaustion can include:
☀️ Excessive panting or drooling
☀️ Bright red gums
☀️ Lethargy or weakness
☀️ Glassy eyes
☀️ Vomiting or diarrhea
☀️ Increased thirst
☀️ Rapid heart rate
☀️ Collapsing or difficulty standing
If you suspect heat exhaustion, contact your veterinarian immediately or seek emergency veterinary care. Heat stroke can become life-threatening very quickly.
Keep pets cool, hydrated, and avoid long walks or outdoor play during the hottest parts of the day. And remember — pavement can burn paw pads faster than you think! 🐶🔥
