This is a great reminder of why keeping your pets current on their rabies vaccination is so important.

This confirmed case is only a few towns away from us, and while rabies isn’t something we see every day, it is something we take very seriously.

Rabies is a deadly disease, and once an animal begins showing clinical signs, it is fatal. Thankfully, rabies is preventable through vaccination. 💉🐾

This is exactly why rabies vaccination is required at Family Pet Veterinary. It’s not just a routine requirement or a box to check, it’s one of the most important ways we can protect your pets, your family, and our community.

Even pets who stay primarily indoors can have an unexpected encounter with wildlife or another animal. We can’t always prevent those encounters, but we can make sure our pets are protected if one happens.

Please take a moment to check your pet’s rabies vaccine status and make sure they’re up to date. ❤️

August is Dental Month at Family Pet Veterinary! 🐶🐱

Did you know that by the age of 3, most dogs and cats show signs of dental disease? The good news is that it’s one of the most preventable health issues we see!

✨ During the month of August, existing clients can save 10% on professional dental cleanings! We still have a couple of appointments available, so now is the perfect time to get your pet scheduled before they’re gone.

What happens during a dental cleaning?
Your pet is admitted to the hospital in the morning and placed under anesthesia so our veterinary team can safely perform a thorough oral exam and clean every tooth, including below the gumline where harmful plaque and tartar build up. After the teeth are cleaned, they are polished to help slow future plaque accumulation. If any teeth are severely diseased or damaged, they are extracted to eliminate pain and prevent further infection. Once your pet has recovered from anesthesia, they’ll be ready to head home with you that afternoon. Dental cleanings are an outpatient procedure, so your pet gets to sleep in the comfort of their own home that evening.

Why are dental cleanings so important?
🦷 Prevent painful dental disease
🦷 Remove plaque and tartar buildup
🦷 Freshen bad breath
🦷 Prevent infection and tooth loss
🦷 Reduce bacteria that can affect your pet’s overall health
🦷 Help your pet live a happier, healthier, and more comfortable life

Pets are experts at hiding pain, so don’t wait until they stop eating or show obvious signs of discomfort.

Call us at 319-643-3555 to reserve one of our remaining August appointments. We look forward to helping your pet put their healthiest smile forward!

If the fireworks left your pet shaking, hiding, pacing, panting, or unable to settle, you’re not alone. Many dogs and cats struggle with loud noises.

Don’t wait until the next holiday or thunderstorm to make a plan. There are several options that may help keep your pet more comfortable, from behavioral strategies and calming products to prescription medications when appropriate.

☀️ EXTREME HEAT WARNING ☀️

Keep Your Pets Safe This Week!

With temperatures climbing into the 90s, it’s important to protect your furry family members from heat-related illness.

🐾 Provide fresh, cool water at all times.

🐾 Avoid hot pavement. If it’s too hot for your hand for 7 seconds, it’s too hot for your pet’s paws.

🐾 Walk during the early morning or late evening when temperatures are cooler.

🐾 Never leave your pet in a parked vehicle—even for a few minutes.

🐾 Know the signs of heatstroke:
• Excessive panting
• Drooling
• Weakness or stumbling
• Vomiting
• Bright red gums
• Collapse

🚨 If you think your pet is overheating, move them to a cool area and contact your veterinarian immediately.
