๐พ **A little rabies reminder from your concerned groomers โค๏ธ**
Lately, weโve received a concerning number of calls from owners who are choosing not to vaccinate their dogs against rabies. We completely understand that people have different feelings about vaccines โ but rabies is the one vaccine we feel especially strongly about requiring and it is STATE MANDATED.
In New Jersey, rabies vaccination is required for dog licensing (unless a veterinarian provides a medical exemption), and for good reason. Rabies is a **fatal disease in animals and people once symptoms develop.** It can also be carried by wildlife, meaning even an indoor or well-supervised dog can potentially be exposed.
And hereโs the part we really want owners to understand:
If an unvaccinated dog were to bite a groomer, client, or another animal and rabies became a concern, **you cannot simply do a blood test or swab the dog to rule it out.** There is currently no approved antemortem (before euthanization) rabies test for animals. Definitive testing requires the animal to be euthanized and brain tissue examined. ๐ง
That is an incredibly heartbreaking situation for everyone involved โ and one that vaccination can help prevent.
We love your dogs like theyโre our own, and our rabies requirement isn't about judging anyone's personal choices. โค๏ธ **It's about protecting your dog, our groomers, our clients, and the community from a disease that is preventable and almost always fatal once clinical illness develops.**
Please keep those rabies certificates current. We do accept Titer testing if you wish to not over-vaccinate. ๐ถ๐โค๏ธ
