😺 Feline Panleukopenia: What Every Cat Owner Should Know

Feline panleukopenia (FPV) is a highly contagious and potentially life-threatening viral disease that primarily affects kittens and unvaccinated cats. It can spread quickly, especially in multi-cat households, shelters, rescues, and environments where cats come and go.

🚨 What are the signs?

Watch for:

Severe or persistent vomiting
Diarrhea, which may or may not contain blood
Loss of appetite
Extreme lethargy or weakness
Fever—or dangerously low body temperature in severe cases
Dehydration
Abdominal pain
Sudden deterioration, particularly in young kittens

Kittens can become critically ill very quickly. If your kitten or cat is showing these symptoms, veterinary evaluation should not be delayed.

🦠 How does it spread?

FPV is extremely contagious and can spread through contact with infected cats and contaminated:

🐾 F***s and bodily fluids
🥣 Food and water bowls
🧸 Bedding and toys
👕 Hands, clothing and shoes
🏥 Surfaces and equipment

The virus is also remarkably resistant in the environment, which makes proper cleaning and isolation extremely important.

💉 Prevention is key!

The good news: vaccination provides powerful protection. The FVRCP vaccine helps protect cats against feline panleukopenia and is considered a core vaccination for cats.

Young kittens need a series of vaccinations because maternal antibodies can interfere with early vaccine protection. Your veterinarian can recommend the appropriate schedule based on your cat's age and vaccination history.

❤️ If you suspect FPV...

Keep your cat separated from other cats and contact your veterinarian immediately. Do not assume that a sick kitten simply has an upset stomach. Early veterinary care and appropriate supportive treatment can make a significant difference.
