Scratching isn't your cat being naughty. It's normal cat behavior! 😺

Cats scratch to:
🐾 Stretch their muscles
🐾 Maintain their claws
🐾 Leave visual and scent markers
🐾 Relieve stress
🐾 Mark important areas of their territory

Instead of trying to stop scratching completely, give your cat somewhere appropriate to do it.

Try both vertical and horizontal scratchers and experiment with different materials like cardboard, sisal and carpet.

And here's an important tip: put the scratching post where your cat actually wants to scratch.
The beautiful scratching tower hidden in the basement isn't much help if your cat's favorite scratching spot is the living room sofa. 😂

The problem may be that the carrier only appears right before something your cat doesn't love.

Try making it part of the furniture instead!
🏠 Leave the carrier out year-round.
🛏️ Put a soft blanket or bed inside.
🦴 Occasionally toss treats into it.
😺 Let your cat explore and sleep in it without closing the door.
🚗 Take an occasional short practice car ride that doesn't end at the vet.

For some anxious cats, we can also prescribe medication to give at home before their appointment to make traveling and veterinary visits much less stressful.

A calmer trip starts before you leave the house. ❤️

Walk down the cat food aisle and you'll find approximately 47,392 choices. 😹

So what does your cat actually need?

Cats are obligate carnivores, which means their nutritional needs are different from ours—and from dogs!

A few tips:
🥩 Choose a complete and balanced diet appropriate for your cat's life stage.
🥫 Wet food can be a great way to increase water intake.
⚖️ Measure meals instead of keeping the bowl endlessly full, especially for cats prone to weight gain.

🩺 Cats with certain medical conditions may benefit from a prescription diet.

And don't choose a food just because the bag has beautiful ingredients and great marketing.

Nutrition is more complicated than an ingredient list!

Cats are REALLY good at pretending everything is fine. 😼

In the wild, showing weakness can make an animal vulnerable, so our house cats have retained an impressive ability to hide pain and illness.

Sometimes the first signs are surprisingly subtle:
🐾 Sleeping more or hiding
🐾 Jumping less often
🐾 Changes in appetite or thirst
🐾 Grooming more—or less
🐾 Changes in litter box habits
🐾 Becoming unusually grumpy or clingy
🐾 Losing weight

You know your cat better than anyone. If something just seems off, it's worth paying attention.

Regular veterinary exams are especially important for cats because we can sometimes find problems long before they become obvious at home. ❤️

Common senior-cat health problems include:
🩺 Kidney disease
🦋 Hyperthyroidism
🦷 Dental disease
🩸 High blood pressure
🍬 Diabetes
🦴 Arthritis
❤️ Heart disease

Many of these conditions can be managed much more successfully when they're caught early.

That's why routine exams—and often bloodwork and urine testing—become even more important as cats get older.
