Bittersweetly introducing our newest litter, the Brownie Boys ๐พ
These beautiful boys are strong, chunky puppies given to us by Punk's BT Lady Monroe and Punk's BT Moosilauke Viktor Sackett. Mama Monroe is the most attentive, relaxed mother. We are so, so blessed.
Though with the joy we feel welcoming them, there is also a sense of loss that only the most committed breeders feel. I think it's important to share. Monroe's x-ray showed 5 seemingly perfect puppies last week, yet today there are only three. What started as an almost peaceful Friday morning labor (Monroe literally had a pup in our bed), ended with hours of CPR and life saving measures. The fifth and final puppy was a girl. She came out breach and Monroe struggled. I can only assume she aspirated on her fluid-filled sack. I did everything that I could, but sometimes it's not enough. Except what I thought would be the worst of it, wasn't going to be.
We've had small puppies born when compared to their siblings, but none I would classify as a runt. This boy was different. He weighed in at a staggering 3.4 oz - less than half his siblings weight. We were on top of his feedings, ensuring he wasn't constantly pushed out of the way. We supplemented to keep him hydrated. He was doing SO well! But mere hours can change everything, as is what happened over the course of Saturday night. He began fading, more quickly than I could have ever imagined. We took every measure to keep him here. We lost our soulful fighter by Monday afternoon.
I'm physically and emotionally depleted. I'm just now coming up for air. We have a toddler, 10 dogs of our own, livestock animals, small animals, and full time jobs. We didn't sleep. We rearranged everything for this boy. There were bright glimmers of hope, so we were determined. I truly thought he would pull through, so I am heartbroken. As my dear friend and mentor from Moonshine Ranch Kennel told me, "The day we don't care like we do is the day we should stop breeding, but until then we learn and give it our all." I'll never forget these lessons.
And now, to give these sweet boys and their mama my all. Applications will open soon. For now, we're focusing on thriving. ๐พ
