OK folks .... right now every single animal rescue & shelter in the US are filled to the max and animals are dying. Why? Because for reasons that are unacceptable to all of us in rescue, people are not altering their pets, more specifically cats.
In this area, it's not like there aren't low-cost options out there. Alley Cat in E.Liverpool, OH (330-892-8985) and Fix'Ur Cat in Washington, PA (724-416-3265) are just down the highway or the pike.
For some reason pet owners are letting their cats get pregnant by their own litter/housemates or irresponsibly letting them outdoors. How does anyone not understand that their female is somehow miraculously is not going to end up pregnant? And, where are these kittens supposed to go? My friends, they say. The same friends that are going to do the same thing they did and now even more kittens are going to be born. And, where are those kittens supposed to go? Many are just released outside without any thought to them having litters of their own.
Understand, those born outside have a 90% or more death rate. How many of you have seen the condition of kittens born outdoors that are being eaten alive by fleas and maggots? Fleas sucking the life out of the kittens making them anemic, causing death. Respiratory and eye issues. Wildlife making them their dinner.
People, you have got to do better. There is no reason why you cannot put $10-20 away each month to put towards the spay/neuter. If you can find the money for Starbucks, tattoos, fast food, new phones, gaming systems, and other you sure in the ..... can do it for your pet. Do any of you have the thousands of dollars needed for an emergency spay should your pet end up with pyometra (uterine infection)?
BCAWL did mobile low-cost spay/neuter clinics for 14 years, with 5000 coming through us. Thank you to every single pet owner that did so. You are our heroes. Asked why we stopped. Because we couldn't fill the appointments any longer. Not because there weren't animals to be done. Because it was always, "I don't have the money." You do, but the pet was not your priority.
From us and from every rescue and shelter, PLEASE make it a priority to get your cats (and dog) altered. Live are depending on it.
