Today, Australians and New Zealanders observe Anzac Day - a day of remembrance for all who served, in every war, on every front.
It's a day that has always belonged to more than one nation though. And these two dog proves it.
Sergeant Stubby — a Boston Terrier cross who wandered into a US Army training camp — served on the Western Front, detected gas attacks, found wounded soldiers in no man's land, and became the most decorated war dog of WWI. An American hero.
Half a world away, Digger, a stray bulldog, sailed to Gallipoli with the Australian 1st Division Signal Company. He never left their side. An Australian hero.
Two dogs. Two nations. One unbreakable bond between soldiers and the animals who served beside them.
On Anzac Day, we stand with our Australian and New Zealand friends in remembrance of all who served — American, Australian, and Allied soldiers alike — and we honour every dog who showed up when it mattered most.
Lest we forget.
