Cavies and Canines Animal Rescue We are a 501c3 nonprofit and PACFA-licensed guinea pig rescue and sanctuary in Colorado. We take back our guinea pigs at any time, no questions asked.

We are based out of Northern Colorado and have fosters and adoptable guinea pigs throughout the Front Range. Our goal is twofold – to provide homeless pets with loving homes and provide judgement-free advice to well-intentioned human family members to facilitate a happily ever after. We find that guinea pigs are commonly incorrectly perceived as “starter pets” for kiddos, and given up or abandoned when it becomes clear that they can be higher maintenance, more expensive, or more fragile than expected. It’s also why one of our main goals at Cavies and Canines Animal Rescue is to educate – we want your family to find a pet that is the perfect fit … a win-win for everyone! We recognize that circumstances may change and our priority will always be the well-being and safety of our adopted animals. Amazon wishlist: https://tinyurl.com/8ab5tjbz

While I131 is not invasive and does not come with side effects like chemo, it isn’t completely without risks. So, let’s talk about them.

1) It doesn’t work. We go to Kansas, finish all the testing, go through the isolation period, repeat the CT in 8 weeks, and everything looks the same. This is a very real possibility.

2) It works too well. The attack on the lung metastasis triggers an inflammatory response and respiratory distress, while he is stuck in isolation and the veterinary team is unable to intervene. Because I’ve decided to not stop steroids (thus potentially making treatment less effective) this is not something I’m worrying about too much.

3) His thyroid is rendered non-functional. Hypothyroidism is a possibility I’ve prepared for, and just means he will need to take medication for it daily for life. A small price to pay.

Hi everyone... Wiggs here! I'm more of a behind the scenes guy but have been asked to make a note of some unfortunate events. Natalie has been having some tech issues and been locked out of everything temporarily!

Have no fear the team will monitor messages to make sure us pigs (and people) get the help and answers needed. Take it easy on them as it's not their normal domain! If you had anything scheduled it will remain business as usual.

I’ve had numerous bereaved adopters come to me lately telling me that their primary veterinarian diagnosed their piggie with dental disease and advised they be put down 😳

The other thing I keep getting lately is why would I put Rusty through 12+ molar trims!

Gone are the days when a molar trim was on par with major surgery, coming with significant anesthesia risks, weeks of syringe feeding, and multiple procedures.

Sure, some piggies with genetic dental disease, like Rusty, need regular molar trims. Not all pigs sedate so easily. And not all areas have exotic vets experienced in the procedure. But, plenty of dentals are one-off occurrences, perhaps from not having enough hay in a former life, or going off food when recovering from illness. Certainly not an automatic reason for euthanasia. Even piggies with genetic dental disease can have their teeth corrected and frequency of dentals cut down over time, like Russ.

And I promise you, Rusty is unbothered by his procedures. He comes home from his dentals like nothing even happened, and has been known to popcorn over being able to eat a cookie again.

Welcome new girls Mickey and Sage! These ladies don’t really get along, so we will be finding each of them a cagemate.
