For me, sports medicine has never been just about treating an injury.

With a high-performance horse, the smallest changes can matter. A subtle difference in movement, comfort, attitude, or performance may be the first sign that something isnโ€™t quite right.

Thatโ€™s why I think itโ€™s so important to look at the whole horse.

I want to understand what is normal for that individual athlete, what the rider is feeling, what the horseโ€™s history tells us, and how all of those pieces fit together. ๐Ÿงฉ

So much of my work is about helping horses feel and perform at their best, while identifying small problems before they have the chance to become bigger ones.

That attention to detail is one of the things I love most about sports medicine. ๐Ÿ’™๐Ÿด

US Equestrian ๐Ÿ‡บ๐Ÿ‡ธ has announced an important update to its Drugs & Medications rules that competitors, trainers, and veterinarians should know.

Effective immediately:

โ€ข Cetirizine (Zyrtecยฎ) is now a permitted substance at USEF-licensed competitions. Horses may compete while receiving cetirizine, and a Medication Report Form is no longer required for its use.

โ€ข USEF has also updated its guidance on methocarbamol (Robaxinยฎ) to provide clearer recommendations for its use before competition.

These changes were made following a review by the USEF Veterinary Committee and are intended to support horse welfare while maintaining fair competition. Competitors are encouraged to review the updated guidance before their next show.

You may have noticed the haze across Northern Virginia. Smoke from Canadian wildfires is affecting our local air quality, and your horseโ€™s lungs can be impacted too. ๐Ÿซ

Conditions can vary by location and change throughout the day, so check your local AQI before riding: https://www.airnow.gov/state/?name=virginia

USEF recommends suspending or canceling competitions when the Air Quality Indexreaches 151 or above.

Monitor your horse closely and contact your veterinarian if you notice: ๐Ÿฉบ
โ€ข A resting respiratory rate consistently above 30 breaths per minute
โ€ข Flared nostrils or increased effort when breathing
โ€ข Repetitive or deep coughing
โ€ข Abnormal nasal discharge

A normal resting respiratory rate for an adult horse is generally 12 to 24 breaths per minute.

Keep fresh water close to your horseโ€™s hay, consider soaking hay to reduce additional dust, and remember that skipping one ride is always better than risking unnecessary airway irritation.

Itโ€™s going to be sweltering this week, and heat can hit horses hard. โ˜€๏ธ

A few simple steps can make a big difference: keep fresh water available, replace whatโ€™s lost through sweat, ride during cooler hours, cool down aggressively, and know the warning signs of dehydration or heat stress.

If your horse is panting, weak, not sweating normally, has dark gums or urine, a high temperature, or seems reluctant to drink, donโ€™t wait. Call your veterinarian right away.

Stay cool, stay aware, and keep your horses safe this week, and all summer long. ๐Ÿ’ง
