That information matters. Riders know their horses incredibly well, and subtle changes under saddle can sometimes appear long before there is an obvious problem on the ground.⁣

It’s been a fantastic few weeks for so many of our High Performance Equine clients, and we wanted to celebrate that! 👏

From Devon to Wellington and across Northern Virginia, there was plenty to celebrate.

At Dressage at Devon, Erin Nichols and Elian Royale swept the CDI3*, winning Friday’s Grand Prix and returning Saturday evening to win the Grand Prix Special!

Down in Wellington, Abigail McArdle and Lisbeth TR added another win to their record, taking top honors in the 1.35m Open Stake.

At the Piedmont Jumper Classic, we loved seeing so many familiar faces have a successful week in Upperville. Kara Jones and End Game earned a second-place finish, while Cat Driscoll and Daytona 80 were named 1.35m Open Jumper Champions. Sloane Coles and Nelson also put together some beautiful, clear rounds throughout the show.

A particularly special congratulations goes to my daughter, Paquin Horan and Dapper Dan, who were named Low Children’s Equitation 2’6” Champions AND Low Children’s Hunter 2’6” Champions! Paquin is now riding with Foxcroft School and leasing Dapper Dan, one of the school’s horses. It was a great weekend all around for the Foxcroft riders, whose collective efforts brought home an impressive three championships and four reserve championships.

And over at the Culpeper Finals, Grace Long and Idial STM Z dhad a strong finish in the ribbons in the weekend’s feature jumper classes.

So many great horses, riders, rounds and results to celebrate. Congratulations to everyone on a fantastic week! 🏆🐴

I found myself drawn to equine sports medicine and lameness because I love the investigative side of it 🕵🏻‍♀️⁣
⁣
A lameness exam is rarely just about finding one obvious problem. It’s about asking why a horse isn’t moving, feeling, or performing the way they normally do, then working through the possibilities until the pieces start to come together. ⁣
⁣
That “puzzle” is a big part of what made me fall in love with sports medicine 🧩⁣
⁣
I’ve also been fortunate to train alongside veterinarians who are leaders in this field. Learning from them helped me continue developing my diagnostic skills and gave me a deeper understanding of what it takes to evaluate and support the high-performance horse.⁣
⁣
For me, that process of observing, questioning, investigating, and putting the whole picture together is still one of the most rewarding parts of the job.

Mentorship has played such an important role in my career 🤝⁣

Throughout veterinary school and in the early years of practice, I was incredibly fortunate to learn from experienced veterinarians who were willing to answer questions, share their knowledge, and let me work alongside them. Those relationships helped shape not only the veterinarian I became, but also the way I approach sports medicine today.⁣
⁣
𝗜 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝗻𝗸 𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗳𝗲𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗼𝗻 𝗻𝗲𝗲𝗱𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝘁𝗵𝗮𝘁.⁣
⁣
Young veterinarians need opportunities to learn from people who have been there before them. They need mentors who are willing to teach, encourage, challenge, and support them as they find their footing in equine practice.⁣
⁣
Those relationships can make a huge difference, especially when it comes to helping young veterinarians build confidence and see a long-term future for themselves in this profession.⁣

If we want equine veterinary medicine to remain strong, we have to keep investing in the people coming up behind us. 🐴

For me, sports medicine has never been just about treating an injury.

With a high-performance horse, the smallest changes can matter. A subtle difference in movement, comfort, attitude, or performance may be the first sign that something isn’t quite right.

That’s why I think it’s so important to look at the whole horse.

I want to understand what is normal for that individual athlete, what the rider is feeling, what the horse’s history tells us, and how all of those pieces fit together. 🧩

So much of my work is about helping horses feel and perform at their best, while identifying small problems before they have the chance to become bigger ones.

That attention to detail is one of the things I love most about sports medicine. 💙🐴
