Today Buddy passed away under his favorite shade tree after a short but exhausting struggle in health. It would sure cheer us up to see all the wonderful dogs he sired over the last 9 years. Please post in the comments! Our hearts ache for the love we had and the joy he brought to our family and knowing that is gone but also that his legacy of making puppies for other families to experience the love of a golden has come to an end. His notorious “blue collar” personality, zoomies, his jealous affection if you gave anyone else attention or stopped rubbing him, and the fierce protection of our family will live in our hearts forever.
I will miss his jump of joy and zooming around the house when it was his turn out of the kennel. The way he would come inside and stay in his spot by the front door but never for very long because his duties and his heart desired to stay outside, even in the snow, except he didn’t share an affection for water like he did for his humans. The way he knew to protect us when the neighbors dog would get a little too close to me and the kids on walks, his distinct bark at night alerting us of anything out of the ordinary, his rabbit chasing, badger penning, snake awareness, never missed chore time with the kids and enjoyed being their shadow feeding horses and cattle, and that darn look we will never shake that just let us know he loved us and loved his life here. In all his life he never left the ranch. One time we tried a ranger ride and he tolerated it, but you knew when he loved something and when he didn’t. He never had an off site vet visit. Never desired a love stronger that Jacob’s. If you know how Jake loved the puppies then you know his love for Annie, Ruby, and Buddy. He made this cross for me for Christmas and we both decided this was a fantastic spot to put it. We also welcomed Hank the cow dog over Christmas break which was a dream come true for our family and Jake-to make him a working cattle dog. A project moving forward for Jake and I think he is going to make a fine “best boy” from here on out as Buddy had shown him the ropes of the ranch often.
Buddy loved me. His final tail wag was enough to let me know “thanks mom” on this Mothers Day and I couldn’t be more honored he was mine.
