“He just needs a lot of wet saddle pads…”

I hear this phrase a lot as a trainer out of the mouths of both peers and potential clients. And respectfully, no. He doesn’t.

Gone are the days of taking a young or underdeveloped horse and just riding the tar out of them to get them broke and ready for hard work. If we expect our horses to perform like athletes, we should treat them as such. Thoughtful, intentional muscle building exercises and work routines are required to develop a muscular skeletal system that can not only fulfill the basic level of a riders expectation, but be set up for success to build from it and continue improving.

I encounter too many horses that just don’t have the strength or appropriate muscling to be able to do the job they are being asked to perform. And a lot of the time, the thought process is to just ride them harder or “make ‘em work!” But what if we could approach this differently. With less sweating, with less stress, and less risk of injury or developing evasive habits.

What if we just slowed everything down, got off their backs, and approached this from a physical therapy standpoint with intentional targeted exercises that gave the horse an opportunity to learn about their body better? Can we as an industry take a breath, and allow the time for this to happen? Or do we really just need more wet saddle pads?
