Why sand and why the small dish of grit ( sand/ oyster shells/ limestone )
1. Sand — for dust baths
Keeps feathers and skin in good condition
Quail roll around in fine, dry sand to:
Help control mites and other external parasites.
Absorb excess oil and moisture from their feathers.
Keep their feathers clean and maintained.
Express natural dust-bathing behavior and reduce stress.
What to use: Clean, fine sand in a shallow tray that they can easily enter and exit.

2. Poultry grit — for digestion
Helps grind food in the gizzard
Quail don't have teeth. They swallow small, hard grit particles that collect in their gizzard and help grind food.
Especially useful if they eat whole seeds, grains, grasses, insects, or other unprocessed foods.
Insoluble granite grit stays in the gizzard and helps mechanically break down food.
