Phil starts with a simple, common sense approach of training horses to understand people and teaching people to understand horses. Over the past twenty-five years, Phil has competed in over 1,000 rodeos, qualifying for both the Badlands Circu

it Finals and the Prairie Circuit Finals. Winning at both ends of the arena-rough stock and timed events-led to Phil winning the coveted Linderman Award in 1989. In addition to providing the training and discipline to get both horse and rider ready for top-level competition, Phil has developed his own unique colt starting program that consists of developing a horse/rider relationship based on trust and respect, which establishes a strong set of fundamentals. He has had over 1500 horses in training with an Equistat earnings of over $1,000,000. Phil and his family currently reside at the Haugen Training Facility in Weatherford, Oklahoma. Whether at home, in the rodeo arena, or at a clinic near you, each of Phil's experiences contribute to and reinforce his philosophy of "Training through understanding".

There’s always another horse to ride, another project to finish, another item on the to-do list... but if you’re running on empty, eventually it catches up with you.

In this week's episode of the podcast, I’m talking about managing your energy, avoiding burnout, and why staying mentally fresh is just as important as putting in the work. Sometimes the most productive thing you can do is slow down long enough to recharge.

Most of us spend a lot of time riding our horses two-handed, especially when we're training, tuning, and helping them understand new concepts. But at some point, you've got to put one hand down and find out how much of that foundation is really there.

In this episode, I talk about the benefits of riding both one-handed and two-handed, how each serves a different purpose in your training program, and why riding one-handed is one of the best ways to evaluate your communication, softness, and connection to your horse's mind and feet.

Fargo, ND — May 2026

It’s always good to get back to North Dakota. No matter how many times I’m here, I always enjoy meeting new people, working with new horses, and seeing the progress returning participants have made since the last clinic.

We’d like to send a big thank you to Carrie Schiotz for hosting another great clinic. Carrie consistently brings together a growth-minded group of people who are committed to learning and improving their horsemanship. We’d also like to thank Shannon Eck at NDSU for helping coordinate the use of a great facility for us to spend a few days riding together.

Thank you to everyone who joined us!

Devils Lake, ND — May 2026

This clinic has become a regular stop on our schedule over the past few years, and it’s one I always look forward to. One of the most rewarding parts is getting the opportunity to work with many of the same horses and riders at different stages of their journey.

Watching that progress unfold over time is a great reminder that there are no shortcuts to lasting results. When you commit to a solid foundation and stay consistent with the process, good things happen.

Thank you to everyone who spent a few days riding with us last week, and to our good friend, Connie Soderholm, for hosting!

In this week's episode of the podcast, I'm sharing my thought process behind breeding performance horses with a purpose and having the end goal in mind from the very beginning.

Whether you’re raising rope horses, barrel horses, or all-around performance horses, having a plan matters. Tune in to hear my experiences with different crosses and the factors to consider when choosing your breeding strategy.
