The Feet Tell the Story...

Sometimes the most important visit is routine maintenance: a trim, a reset, a shoe replacement, or a closer look at how the horse is standing.

As Texas weather shifts, ground conditions can change quickly. Dry, hard footing can be tough on the body. Wet, soft ground can affect traction, tenderness, and shoe security.

As fall schedules pick up, horses are being hauled, ridden, worked, and asked to perform in changing weather and changing ground conditions.

A chiropractic adjustment is not just about one pop or one tight spot. It is part of looking at the whole horse: how they carry themselves, where they may be restricted, and what might be affecting comfort or performance.

This is Minnie.

Minnie is a rough and tumble ranch dog at Rapp Ranch.

I don’t always see Minnie on my visits. When I do see her, she meets me at my truck door and hangs out by me until she gets adjusted, however long that may be.

Once she gets adjusted she usually gets the zoomies and takes off. I might see her my next visit or it may be 2-4 weeks.

We do it on Minnie’s schedule.

Heavy rain can change a horse’s world fast.

Soft ground, slick footing, deep mud, standing water, and wet pens can all affect how a horse moves and feels. After a hard rain, some horses may get sore from slipping, pulling through mud, standing unevenly, or moving differently to avoid tender footing.

Wet conditions can also be tough on the feet. Thrush, soft soles, lost shoes, hoof tenderness, and abscess concerns can show up when the ground stays wet.

This is a good time to take note of the small changes.

Is your horse moving shorter?
Are they tender over hard ground?
Did they pull a shoe?
Are they standing differently?
Do their feet need attention after days of wet weather?

At Firewater Equine, Dr. Loe evaluates the whole horse, including hoof balance, movement, body tension, soreness, and the support they may need after weather changes.

The rain may be good for the land, but your horse’s feet and body still deserve a closer look.

Sometimes, a little extra support has its place in the care plan.

Vitamin B12 can be used to support normal metabolism, red blood cell production, appetite, and healthy nerve function when it is appropriate for the horse.

At Firewater Equine, Dr. Loe looks at the whole horse and uses the tools that make sense for that individual patient.
