One thing is for sure: Greta does NOT mess around when it comes to meals. She is always on time, and she will get ALL the little bits and drips out of that bowl!

Charlie is my (Courtney 👋) daily reminder of why I stopped eating cows almost 30 years ago, and finally stopped eating dairy 11 years ago. He is kind, he enjoys the company of others, he loves to stretch out in the sun on a beautiful day…he’s so much more than what the beef and dairy industry want us to believe.

The heat snuck (sneaked? 🤔) up on us this afternoon and I had to pull the fan back out because Ritchie was overheating.

After a few minutes of scratching in cold water puddles for mealworms and letting the fan blow through his beautiful feathers, he was as good as new!

2 chicken posts in one day…the algorithm is gonna love that! 🫠 Chicken posts historically have done poorly, so please interact with this post if you see it 🐓

We’ve had some pretty erratic weather lately, but yesterday was PERFECT for sunbathing. We found Weezy all stretched out several times throughout the day, enjoying the warm (but not too warm!) temps.

When a prey animal feels safe in the space we have made for them, it gives us all the feels!

I think I found the right spot to scratch…what do you think?

It’s and we have been adding items to our list. Some people prefer to send specific gifts over financial donations…if you’re one of those people, please check out our Amazon wishlist here:

I was not prepared for the amount of heart-bursting love I feel for Ritchie rooster. Watching him dote on Astrid - watching over her while she dust bathes, keeping watch over her spot in the coop when she’s out for a stretch break, waiting for her to eat before he does - it fills me with so much awe, joy, and pride. Yesterday he tipped his head and looked straight at me -straight into my soul- and I felt an amazing connection to him.

In this video, you can see him patiently waiting to see if Astrid was going to take any more bites. He really loves when I hand feed him his wet mash, and he was showing great restraint, and respect, giving Astrid time to eat what she wanted first.

Chickens are often overlooked and seen as “less than”, but they aren’t much different from our other companion animals.

We only received about $30 towards our $900 chickens’ vet bill 😩. That’s on me, because I didn’t set up an actual fundraiser for it. I hate asking for money, especially when the economy is the way it is. But I have to do it for those in our care. The majority of our donations come from our personal funds, but if you love our residents and animals in general, would you consider helping us recover from that vet visit? We are always so grateful for any help we receive. All funds go directly to the animals ❤️

These two 😍

Weezy and Simone are doing ok since Henny passed, settling into their new normal. Bedtime is hard for them to figure out, mostly because they used to gang up on Henny and now it’s just Simone picking on Weezy and Weezy can’t take it.

They are attached at the hip throughout the daytime hours, napping, preening, and foraging together. Simone took the loss the hardest; even though Weezy and Henny had been raised together, Simone had really attached herself to Henny in the last weeks of Henny’s life.

I have been looking for hens in need of a safe home, but I have (of course) mostly seen rehoming posts about roosters, and the hens I’ve seen have been far away. We will find them a friend or two, for sure ❤️.

Evolution of a nap, Gray style

It’s a hard life!

Gray lived most of his pre-rescue life outdoors. He probably had shelter (or at least we hope he did), but he most certainly didn’t have a couch to stretch out on! This boy wasted no time figuring out he loved furniture.
