I’ll never understand people who just put new chickens in with their flock and “let them work it out.” Yes, they do need to work it out, and it does take time to do a slow integration, but they deserve to meet each other while feeling safe first.

Chickens can be real jerks.

This video is from yesterday afternoon, day 2, when I let Daphne out of the cabana for the first time. Watch their body language: Daphne already knows Simone is the boss, and makes sure to move slowly away (with her hackles up). She had also just had a sneak attack by Weezy, so she knows her place.

Simone still went after her right after this video was taken.

I’ve been standing guard in with them this afternoon, and Daphne won’t even come out of the cabana. I’m here making sure the others don’t corner her inside her safe area, but I need to do other things so I’ll have to lock her in again in a few minutes. I’ll give her another opportunity to come out again later, and we’ll do this as many times as she needs to feel safe with Weezy and Simone.

Good morning!

It went from 68°F at dusk last night to a feels-like temperature of 30° 🙁 with gusty winds and a bit of rain this morning.

Charlie, Sylvie and Indie seem unbothered, but everyone else went back to bed!

Today is the nine month anniversary of when we had to say goodbye to Timmy so suddenly. It still hurts. He was just a baby, and would’ve turned 4 this month.

Timmy had been diagnosed with cardiomyopathy just months earlier, so we knew he was at high risk for heart attack and sudden death…we just didn’t think it would happen so soon.

Miss you, Tim Tim. 🖤

We had a great time at Farmshire Animal Sanctuary vegan fair yesterday! The weather was gloomy and wet so the turnout wasn’t as good as last year, but there were plenty of people who braved the mud to support a good cause. Thank you to everyone who stopped by our booth to say hi, chat about the animals, and offer donations! **So far there are only 11 entries for the Sylvie drawing! I’m kind of shocked.

And thank you to our friends at Compassionate Kitchen for donating their leftover samples of baked goods!! They were a big hit here 💜

🎉RAFFLE OPPORTUNITY🎉

A few weeks ago, a wonderful human and artist, Janet Cain, reached out to offer a one of a kind drawing of one of our residents so that we could raffle it off. We could have chosen anyone, but it’s pretty clear that Sylvie is a favorite of most of our followers!

She sent a picture of it partway through her process, and I cried because it was so beautiful. The finished drawing is even more amazing in person! Even just using pencil, she really captured Sylvie’s sweetness.

We will have it available to view at Farmshire’s Vegan Fair tomorrow (weather permitting; we don’t want to ruin it), but since we have very few local followers we thought we’d also offer raffle tickets to her many online fans!

$5 donation = 1 entry ($10=2, etc)

Cash donation option in person, but anyone can donate through Venmo or PayPal! *Please specify in the notes section that it’s for the Sylvie drawing, and put your Instagram or Facebook handle there as well so we can notify you if you win.

Raffle will end 10/17 at 9 pm Eastern time. We will draw a name next week!

The most amazing feeling…to be greeted with such enthusiasm by a friend who was once so afraid of humans that she hid in the woods for months.

The humans she knew before her woodland adventure were unkind. But Sylvie has left those scary memories behind, and knows she’s safe 🩷
