Part 1: The suspense is over! For those of you who guessed “The Pony Express National Historic Trail,” you are correct!

This past week, Freedom the wild horse, BLM Wild Horse and B***o Program’s 250th anniversary ambassador, rode a portion of the National Pony Express Re-Ride. This annual event commemorates the legendary Pony Express.

On the eve of the Civil War, with an ever-expanding western populace, the Pony Express answered the need for fast and reliable communication between the east and the west. Lasting just 18 months, from April 1860- October 1861, the Pony Express was established as a private mail service, bringing mail between St. Joseph, Missouri, and Sacramento, California. Forty riders on horseback formed a solid relay across the country and delivered mail in as little as 10 days.

Freedom is not the only wild horse to have ridden the Pony Express—now or in the past! The original Pony Express utilized over a hundred horses, including mustangs. Horses had to be tough and fast to be used for the mail service, and the hardiness and resilience of mustangs made them a popular choice for rugged areas.

Though the mail service ended in 18 months, it has become a vital part of the story of the American Frontier. Each year, the National Pony Express Association honors the legacy of the Pony Express through an annual re-ride—one that takes riders through BLM managed land in California, Colorado, Nevada, and Utah. Freedom’s participation is a special nod to this legacy. Mustangs helped power the original Pony Express, and today Freedom carries that history forward as part of the 250th commemoration—celebrating resilience, connection, and the public lands that shaped our nation.
