Had a blast at Horse Club yesterday! Huge shout out to Jody for the donation of time, knowledge and supplies for our horsey craft! Levi, our Quarter Horse model, stood still as a statue as we examined his big t***y, muscled build and rounded jawline. Star, Diva and Sprout assisted in teaching correct handling through gates and then dozed quietly during their midday spay treatments.

Eight shows. Four months. Zero placings across every class I entered. I want to be precise about what that period felt like because I think people post the win and not the eight losses before it and the eight losses are the actual story. I drove home from show five in silence for two of the four hours. I sat in my truck in my driveway for twenty minutes at the end of show six before going inside because I needed to process before I saw anyone. After show seven my trainer said something to me that I've thought about every day since — she said you're learning how to lose which is the hardest skill in this sport and most people quit before they finish learning it. I didn't quit. What kept me going was not confidence — I didn't have much confidence by show six. What kept me going was the work. I had put too much honest work into this to let eight bad shows be the thing that defined whether the work was worth it. I knew the work was good. I knew my horse was improving. I knew the number on the results sheet was not the full measurement of what was happening between us. Show nine: clean pattern, personal best time, first place. I didn't scream. I sat on my horse at the out gate and breathed for a minute and then I called my trainer and said it happened. She already knew. 🐴🏆
