🚤 Captain Beni Bob wants you and your family to have a safe and happy summer! Here are some things to remember when boating or swimming with your furry family member:

🛟 Properly fitted pet life jackets are a great way to help ease tired swimmers. They are available in many sizes and colors! Bright colored life jackets can make your dog easy to spot by other boaters.

🤿 Be sure your dog can and wants to swim before heading out to the sand bar, lake or beach. Keep in mind that not all dogs can swim, or like to swim. If you plan to anchor and swim as a family, be sure to have a way to get your pet safely back into the boat.

🦠 Lakes, rivers ans ponds can produce Cyanobacteria (Blue-green algae) that can be highly toxic when consumed. Avoid water that looks discolored, foamy, or scummy.

🥵Dogs can easily over heat. Keep in mind that just because they are swimming, doesn’t mean they are cool. Provide your pet with shade, fresh water and try to avoid fetch sessions during the hottest part of the day.

💩 Please remember to clean up after your pet. Carry doggy-poop bags and be sure to pick up pet waste asap so others can enjoy the area as well!

🚿 Rince your dog after every swim to remove pool chemicals, salt, sand, and lake bacteria from their fur.

🐶 Dogs with floppy ears are prone to infections when water gets trapped. Gently dry the inside of their ears with a towel, (DO NOT USE Q-Tips). Having ear cleaner on hand to use following water time can greatly reduce the occurance of ear infections.

Be safe! Have fun! Make Memories!

Love,
Beni Bob

It’s that time of year again and Independence Day celebrations are happening everywhere! WVVS recommends keeping your animals safe and happy with a list of the following:

🇺🇸Create a safe and secure environment indoors for your pet. Loud noises and flashing bright lights often lead to fear and panic.

🎵Turn up the volume on the TV or Radio to down out the loud boom, bangs and crackles. Have your pet wear an anxiety aid, such as Thunder Jacket. Spray or diffuse calming pheromones.

🗝️ Be sure to check all windows and doors; a panicking animal can bust through screens, or push through unlatched doors.

🪪 Have your pet wear identification such as an ID tag or microchip information. Double check to make sure your contact information is up to date. More dogs go missing this time of year than any other holiday!

💊 Early Veterinary intervention such as prescription medication for severe cases of anxiety may be necessary. Be sure to reach out this week if you think medications may be needed for your pet.

👎🏼 Do not bring your pets to fireworks shows. Public events are very stressful on everyone, most definitely your pets.

🍔 Avoid human food at all costs! Common foods such as grapes, onions, raisins, garlic, alcohol, BBQ skewers, chocolate, or candies containing Xylitol can be fatal. Many foods may not be toxic, but can cause major GI upset, vomiting and diarrhea. (And who wants to deal with that?!)

🚮 Secure your trash. Dogs especially have a unique ability to find “unique” treasures that can cause blockages, choking or organ failure.

🇺🇸❤️💙 Let’s keep everyone safe and have a wonderful Independence Day Celebration.

Love,
Dr. Myszka and the team at WVVS
