This week we are celebrating Certified Veterinary Technician Week! At WVS we have two CVT's on our staff. Here is a little more info about the profession and the work our certified tech's do for our clinic.

"A Certified Veterinary Technician (CVT) is a highly trained veterinary professional who works under the supervision of a licensed veterinarian to provide medical care and technical support for animals," Dr. Emma explained. "CVTs play a vital role in patient care and help veterinary practices deliver safe, efficient, and high-quality medicine."

To become a CVT, individuals typically complete a two-year accredited veterinary technology program, earn an associate degree in veterinary technology, and pass a national credentialing examination. Many states also require additional licensing, certification, or registration before a technician can practice.

"In a large animal practice, CVTs assist with handling and restraining animals, collecting samples, administering medications and treatments, monitoring anesthesia, performing laboratory procedures, and preparing equipment. Their knowledge, technical skills, and ability to anticipate the veterinarian's needs help improve patient care, increase efficiency, and ensure that farm and equine patients receive the best possible treatment," Emma said. "We are lucky to have two valuable CVTs at our practice!"

Kari Slager works in our milk lab, does health papers, and assists vets with submitting labwork. She also spends a lot of time out in the field with various doctors.

"Kari is a cerified vet tech that works mainly in the milk lab, but to say that's all she does would be an understatement. Kari helps process thousands of samples through the lab. She receives, processes and sends out diagnostic samples and processes health papers for livestock and fairs as well as coggins for horses. Along with that she also goes out on the farm to help with large cattle sales and she assists me with puppy and kennel inspections every other week," Dr. Kelsey said. "She works closely with all of the veterinarians at the clinic. We greatly appreciate all of her hard work, the long hours she puts in and her ability to understand what the veterinarian wants and her drive to make it happen! She is a key part of our team!"

"Angela has a diverse skill set and spends time both in the clinic and on-farm. She works in the blood lab, sterilizes our surgery equipment, and helps with our cat neuter days, " Dr. Emma said.

On-farm Angela does all of the semen handling for Dr. Emma's laparoscopic AI, reads semen slides for breeding soundness exams, and assists with equine work (x-rays, dentals, etc.!).

We are so thankful for our wonderful CVTs!!!

Dr. Mary recently spent a morning teaching the Beaver Dam High School large animal vet health class students about lung ultrasounding in calves. The agriculture department is caring for three calves in its lab, one calf for each class. Dr. Mary ultrasounded each calf to explain the process of identifying pneumonia in calves in an early stage.

"One of the major disease challenges in raising calves is respiratory disease. Lung damage in calves has a lifetime effect on weight gain, reproduction and milk production," Dr. Mary said. "Ultrasounding the lungs early in the calf's life will help us diagnose and treat subclinical pneumonia and increase treatment success rate."

While ultrasounding the calves lung, Dr. Mary determines the lung health on a scale from 0-5, 0 being healthy to 5 being severe with treatment needed. The students had the opportunity to see three different levels of lung health in the calves with imaging ranging from 0 to moderate to severe.

"Ultrasounding the lung helps us to understand the severity of the pneumonia which in turn allows us to choose the appropriate antibiotic for treatment based on imaging," Dr. Mary said. "I will return to scan the calves again in 2-3 weeks to check their progress with the treatment."

Dr. Mary is one of several doctors at Waupun Vet who regularly ultrasound lungs at farms in our area as part of their herd health program. If you would like more information on the WVS lung ultrasounding program for your farm, please give the clinic a call!

Livestock can choke on their feed, but do you know the signs of a choke?

It may seem like an unusual question, right? It probably can't breath, gasping for air? Not really the case. Unlike in humans, horses for example, can still breath because the airway remains open.

"Choke in horses is an esophageal obstruction where food or a foreign object is stuck in the esophagus but unlike in humans, the horse can still breathe because the airway remains open," Dr. Emma explained.

Some of the warning signs of a horse choking can include:
✅Green or frothy discharge of saliva and food coming from the nostrils and/or mouth.
✅Excessive drooling or hyper-salivation.
✅Coughing, gagging, or stretching the head and neck.
✅Anxiety, restlessness, or acting colicky.
✅A firm lump visible or palpable on the left side of the neck.

Common causes of a horse with choke often include eating dry or pelleted feed and beet pulp too quickly without enough saliva. Poor dental health or sharp points that prevent proper chewing. Swallowing large chunks of treats like carrots or apples, or foreign materials like wood shavings. Eating too soon after receiving sedatives. Eating too quickly when there is a lot of competition with other horses.

Immediate action is necessary when you suspect a choke. Remove all access to food, water, and grazing immediately. Contact your veterinarian right away. Do not attempt to clear the blockage yourself with a hose.

Prevention with regular care can go a long way! Schedule regular dental exams to ensure your horse can chew properly and doesn't have dental abnormalities. Thoroughly soak pelleted feeds, beet pulp, and hay cubes before feeding. Slow down fast eaters by placing large, smooth rocks in the feed tub or using slow-feeder nets. These things can slow down eating.

Pictured above Dr. Emma and Dr. Ralph along with vet student, Abby, work on a horse that is choking. The horse's esophagus was all cleared by the doctors and is following feeding instructions that include a diet with soaked feed.

There are two small signs that hang in the clinic.

The first reads, "WVS - Supporting Youth in Agriculture," and the other reads, "The mediocre tells, the good explains, the superior demonstrates and the great inspires."

Many probably don't notice the signs when they come in for supplies, but they both have a big meaning at WVS. As summer turns into fall it's a nice time to reflect on the season. Our top priority in this business is always to offer our producers the best services so they are successful, but summer brings an extra opportunity for us.

Summers are filled with fairs, horse shows, dairy, pig, sheep and goat shows, poultry exhibitions, dairy breakfasts and all sorts of exciting agricultural activities. It's an opportunity for us to support agriculture and youth in agriculture.

With 15 vets in our practice each one of us are passionate about this amazing industry we work in and each one has their own way of encouraging, supporting and educating the public and the next generation of farmers and future ag industry leaders.

That support starts right on your farm, whether it's trying to figure out why your daughter's horse is lame by doing a lameness exam. Maybe your child's steer's horns are just a 1/4 inch too long, your show lamb somehow cut it's leg and needs stitches, how about that heifer that came up with an abscess on its leg just a few weeks before the big show or maybe your pig has a skin issue you just can't get cleared up.... we're here to help you.

We're invested in you, your children and your animals. We want your child's horse to show well, your steer to make weight, your pig to shine, your lamb to show off its muscles or your heifer to stride around the ring during its class. We see the work, the endless hours, the ups and downs. We're in your corner cheering.

While some vets at our clinic are passionate about helping those hardworking kids who are growing, raising, training livestock and horses, other doctors are passionate about helping students - the youth who are just about ready to move out into the world as a veterinarian.

They still have a lot of learning to do and we take the opportunity of teaching very seriously. And so our summer is filled with teaching, hands-on learning, guidance and growth and we hope we are able to make an impact on each one of those young vet students who traveled with us to your farms this summer.

While most of the fairs, shows and big summer events are over, and students return to school, we still host more local vet students, donate to FFA events and teach 4-H classes throughout the year. We are here to support you.

Above all, we want to thank you for choosing us to be apart of your livestock family and team in this amazing agricultural industry. In a world where corporations are taking over every inch of every industry, we are thankful our farmers choose us.

As always, give us a holler if you have any livestock medical needs. We got you.
