👻🧡 Our next resident ADOPTA-BOO is TOBY! 🧡👻

Toby came to CARE in 2021 after spending more than a decade with his previous family. They openly admitted that they weren’t sure how to properly care for him, and unfortunately, Toby had been living on a cockatiel seed diet and hadn’t been out of his cage in quite some time.

When Toby came to CARE, we started working with him and getting to know his personality. And we quickly discovered something about Toby…

He’s a biter. 😂

And not a picky one, either. Toby is an equal-opportunity biter. It doesn’t matter who you are—he doesn’t discriminate! After getting to know him and understanding his boundaries, we ultimately decided that Toby would be happiest and safest as a CARE resident.

But don't let that fool you—Toby has one of the BIGGEST personalities in the room! He is incredibly smart, curious, and constantly learning.

We even started a vocabulary and sound board for Toby, and so far, we’ve documented more than 100 different words, phrases, and sounds! 🤯🦜 And he’s still adding to his list!

This year, during Toby’s annual veterinary exam, we discovered that his liver values have climbed above the normal range. Thankfully, he is not in complete liver failure. It’s something we are closely monitoring, but right now Toby is comfortable, stable, and continuing to enjoy life at CARE.

And apparently, he’s been working on some new material. 😂

His newest phrase? “Here kitty kitty!” 🐱😂

Toby may not be your typical ADOPTA-BOO, but he is absolutely one of ours. He’s a complicated little guy with a HUGE personality, an incredible vocabulary, and a whole lot of sass—and we love him exactly as he is. 🧡🎃🦜

Our next two very special ADOPTA-BOOS have been with CARE since 2020… Paco & Fritzie. ❤️🎃

Some birds come to CARE with a story that stays with you. Paco and Fritzie are two of those birds.

They came to us when their dad was very sick and preparing to enter hospice care. Mary and Lori went to pick them up, and we could immediately see how much these two meant to him.

Paco and Fritzie weren't simply pets. They were part of his family. They had the run of certain areas of the house, and when their dad was healthy, they even went to work with him.

Their dad was a semi-truck driver, and rather than leave his birds behind, he took Paco and Fritzie on the road with him. 🚛🦜

These two have traveled all over the country with their dad. They saw places most birds never will, but more importantly, they got to spend their days with the person they loved.

When he became too sick to care for them, his biggest concern wasn't himself. It was making sure Paco and Fritzie would be safe.

He trusted CARE to give them the life he could no longer provide.

Their dad has since passed away. 💔

But his family hasn't forgotten them. They still come to visit Paco and Fritzie, and one of the most touching things is seeing the happiness on their faces when they see how well these two are doing.

There is something incredibly special about caring for senior birds who have already lived so much of their lives alongside someone they loved.

Paco and Fritzie have lost their dad, but they haven't lost the love that surrounded them.

They are still together. They are still cared for. They are still loved.

And every day, we get the privilege of carrying out the promise their dad made when he could no longer do it himself — to make sure Paco and Fritzie would be okay. ❤️

These two aren't just another pair of birds at CARE.

They are a little piece of someone's life that he trusted us to protect.

And we will continue to do exactly that. ❤️🦜

👻💜 Meet one of our newer ADOPTA-BOOS… PETRI! 💜👻

Petri is a DNA-sexed female Lovebird who came to CARE as a transfer from the Wisconsin Humane Society. Because of her unknown history, we don’t know exactly how old she is or what her life was like before coming to us.

Petri does seem to be hand-tame, although she definitely has a little bit of SPICE to her personality! 🌶️😉 Like many Lovebirds, she has a big personality packed into a tiny body and isn’t afraid to let you know what she thinks.

Petri has been thoroughly vet checked and is ready to find a loving home where she can continue to thrive and show off all of her adorable personality.

🎃🧡 Meet our newest ADOPTA-BOO… DIEGO! 🧡🎃

Diego’s story is one that reminds us that sometimes, you just never know what a bird has been through before they come to CARE.

About a year and a half ago, Diego was purchased from 7 Mile Fair by someone who believed they were bringing home a baby bird. But when Diego was surrendered to CARE, we could tell right away that he was definitely not a youngster.

He had a very worn leg band, so we started investigating the markings on the band. We were eventually able to determine that Diego was hatched in Puerto Rico in 2008, making this handsome boy 18 years old! 🦜❤️

And while 18 years may sound like a long time, we can't help but wonder how much of that time Diego truly got to experience being a bird.

He was kept in a small cage with just one small wooden dowel perch. He didn't have the space, variety, or enrichment that every bird deserves.

Now, things are different. ❤️

Diego has been medically cleared and is settling into his new life at CARE. He has a much larger cage, different types of perches for his feet, and LOTS of toys to discover.

Some of it is still new and a little confusing to him. We're watching him learn how to play, explore, and figure out what all these wonderful new things are!

We're still getting to know Diego's personality, but that's one of the most rewarding parts of rescue — watching a bird slowly realize that life can be different.

Diego is 18 years old, but we believe he still has so much life left to live. We would love nothing more than to see him spend those years in a home that will cherish him, give him the enrichment he has missed, and love him for exactly who he is.

👻 Our next ADOPTA-BOO is another very special CARE resident… Mr. Beautiful! 🖤

Mr. Beautiful came to CARE in early 2020 along with his brother, Shakey. For more than 30 years, the two boys had not been handled by people, but they were comfortable in their cages, surrounded by plenty of toys and everything they knew.

But there was something about Mr. Beautiful that made him extra special. ❤️

Mr. Beautiful is completely blind.

When he first came to CARE, our vet recommended putting him in a smaller cage to help keep him safe. But we wanted to give him as much space and opportunity as possible, so we made some adjustments and placed him in a standard Umbrella Cockatoo cage—40" x 30" x 60".

We gave him two sets of food and water dishes, including a set down on the cage floor, and carefully arranged his perches so he could easily navigate his surroundings.

And you know what?

Mr. Beautiful THRIVED. 🥹

He loves playing with his toys—and he's surprisingly good at unhooking them! 😂 He knows exactly when mealtime is coming, and over the years, he has even become comfortable enough to let us work out those stubborn pin feathers on the top of his head.

Watching him learn, adapt, and truly enjoy his life has been such a gift. He may not be able to see the world around him, but he certainly knows how to make the most of it. ❤️

Mr. Beautiful is one of those residents who reminds us that sometimes, the accommodations we make for a bird can open up an entire world of possibilities for them.

And for Mr. Beautiful, CARE is home. 🏡❤️

GOOFY. 😂

These little guys are playful, curious, mischievous, cuddly, and just the right amount of CHAOS! They can turn just about anything into a toy, find trouble where you least expect it, and somehow manage to make us laugh every single day.

Green-cheeks may be small, but their personalities are anything but! 💚

👻 Continuing our ADOPTA-BOOS is MAGOO! 🎃

Magoo came to CARE in early 2017 after his mom sadly passed away in a car accident. Our wonderful Lori took him in and gave him a safe, loving home where he quickly became part of the CARE family. ❤️

Over the years, Magoo has had quite the life! He has helped us with countless educational events, met so many people, and even had his moment in the spotlight when he appeared in a TV commercial! 📺🦜

Now that Lori has retired, she has given us her blessing to begin searching for the perfect forever home for Magoo. This is a bittersweet step, but we know there is someone out there who will appreciate Magoo for exactly who he is — quirks, antics, personality and all. 🥰

Magoo isn't just looking for a home. He's looking for someone who will become his person, love him unconditionally, and give him the happy life he deserves.

Adoption Update: Morgan!

"It’s been almost 2 years and we live this bird to pieces! Morgan has become so social. He even came with to drop our middle kid off for his first year at UW Platteville! Some of the parents asked if he was moving in too! The other pictures were this weekend at our cabin. He has a tree he likes to sit in to guard his “yard”. Otherwise Lola (our one winged Ringneck) and he sit on our deck yapping back and forth playing. He gets to see his Vet Laura Johnson for his beak every 4 weeks and even says Laura now. We follow your site daily and still look for updates on Ava and Captain. Saw Mr. Captain got to go for his annual vet appt a few weeks ago. Thank you for giving us our amazing guy and look forward to many, many more years and adventures with our boy!"

We are beyond happy to know that Morgan has found the perfect home and we know he is a happy guy!

👻 Our next BOOS are two very special CARE residents! 👻

Meet Big Lou and Bubba — two birds whose pasts have left permanent marks, but whose lives today are filled with love, comfort, and purpose. ❤️

Big Lou came to CARE in 2006, after spending 20 years living in a garage in Chicago. Bubba arrived in 2017, and her condition was so severe that her veterinarian warned us not to let her fall because her calcium level was dangerously low.

Sadly, both birds spent much of their lives in cages that were far too small for them. They were never given the space they needed to properly stretch, move, climb, and thrive. The damage from those years cannot be undone.

Neither Lou nor Bubba can fully open their wings.

Lou's shoulders are so severely arthritic that they are essentially frozen in place. Bubba's shoulders and elbows are also frozen, leaving her unable to open her wings at all. 💔

Their stories are heartbreaking — but they are also incredibly important.

Today, Lou and Bubba are very loved members of the CARE family. They may not be able to fly or use their wings the way other birds can, but they have an important job: helping us educate others about proper bird care and the lifelong consequences of inadequate housing and nutrition.

They remind us that a cage isn't simply a place to keep a bird. Birds need room to move, exercise, stretch their wings, climb, play, forage, and live the lives they deserve.

Their past can't be changed. But we can make sure their stories help change the future for other birds. 🧡

Lou and Bubba may be our BOOS, but they are also two of our teachers. 🎃🦜
