Words matter. Names matter. The worst you will probably ever hear me call a horse is silly. It's what Ive come up with for any sort of silly, dumb, ridiculous behavior that I dont have a word for yet. So I just say the horse is being silly or well thats silly. Until I can figure out what's going on. I dont believe we should call them worse than that. Unless we call them dangerous when they truly are being dangerous ect. But there's a name we call so many of our horses and it seems pretty benign. That word is lazy. I dont believe a horse is ever being lazy and I have worked hard for years removing that word from my horse vocabulary. If the slow horse isn't lazy then what are they? There are many possibilities. Tired, dull, uneducated, sore, weak, confused unmotivated, needing to conserve energy. Most of these things are human error. So the next time the word lazy goes to roll out your mouth about the horse your with ask yourself what is it really? When I'm teaching I will say the horse is being sleepy or sticky and then I explain why or try to find the why. If you ever hear me say a horse is lazy you have full permission to call me out on it! -Melissa

Ive slowly been creating a little bubble of space where the horse is respected. They get to live like horses should. We are kind but still set boundaries. We talk about them in high regard. If it weren't for social media I would forget other ways exist. Apparently even with social media I forgot until it krept into my bubble a little. From where I stand now so opposite on the spectrum its a shock to the system to hear. I challenge horse owners to use positive adjectives about your horse for one week. See how it changes you.

I started Jake my super easy keeper who I "didn't have to feed" on vitamins, minerals, and herbs about 2 years ago. Since then hes always soft and shiny (unless I take him off them and in the winter he looks a little feral). In all that time hes never once had dapples. Its pretty cool what functional movement can do!

Yesterday I shared Jakes 4 months progress with the help of my trainer. Ive just been working with him in my lessons and not my other horses yet. The other day we did a lesson with Nova and it was so incredible to see how she quieted down and unscrambled her legs with just my seat! The day after she was even better. I have so much hope for this girls future. She was so angry when I bought her back and was dangerous. But thankfully I was able to get her calm, happy and pleasant again without getting hurt. Now she sweetly come up to me and wants to hang out đź–¤

My 18 year old grade Quarter Horse gelding Jakes 4 month progress. He has one working eye which will cause balance issues, and old forms of training caused some body lameness. We have been fumbling around for years on our own trying to achieve soundness, balance, calmness ect. Body work helped greatly but wasn't our full answer. Finding a trainer to help us with straightness, balance and all the small but huge foundational pieces has changed us so much. He certainly feels like he is aging backwards. He feels the best he has ever felt. And we are both happy and finding peace. I know in these pictures we have different lighting and different time of year so different coat color ect. But those postural changes are pretty clear!! Get you a trainer that will help you and your horses body, mind, and soul! (But also be willing to put in the slow boring work (which isn't boring to me))

*ADOPTED*
OLAF is ready to search for his new family! He is absolutely sweet, 18 years old, and broke to ride. He has not been ridden in a few years. He would make a great unicorn for photo shoots and has done that in the past. Olaf is a lepord appolossa with cream colored spots! I will be picky on his new home. He has had some lamanitis in the past and is now sound and comfy. He needs regular hoof trims and minimal to no grass. He gets along with mares and geldings.
