Canine Enrichment and Why Its Important!
Enrichment is probably one of the most important things you can do with your dog to help them live a happy and healthy life. It helps stimulate their brain and helps them mentally reset if they are stressed. If used correctly, it can also help associate positive interactions in scary or new situations!
Overall, Canine Enrichment is very important for your dogs health and wellbeing. Here's some examples of enrichment you can do with your dog:
Training sessions: 15-20 minutes of training 2-3 times a day can be SO rewarding and mentally stimulating for dogs, its a healthy way to keep the brain active and while learning new things too! (Be sure to stop when your dog is showing signs of being done, overtraining can cause more negative effects then good!)
Food & Treat Puzzles: These are perfect for feeding meals or just for a fun activity during the day, if your dog is having an off day and you think training sessions might be too much, go ahead and add some enrichment toys! They come in SO many varieties and levels of difficulty so there is one for every dog! You can find them at most pet stores or even online.
Decompression Walks: These are intended walks that have no commands or strict rules. They let your dog just be a dog! I recommend doing this ONLY if your dog has a strong recall, some dogs might take advantage of being on a long lead. Let your dog set the pace and just let them take in the surroundings and sniff, its perfect for them to let out built up stress and frustration. Letting them just sniff around lowers the heart rate and just lets them reset in the human world. Open fields, nature parks, and even renting a Sniff Spot is my preferred way.
Frozen Treat Toys: These are a staple in my house, we use them almost daily. We use kongs and any other brand of stuffable toy, fill them with wet food or peanut butter and freeze! I like to fill them halfway with kibble so the wet food doesn't get stuck in there and make it harder to clean.
