This National Veterinary Technician Week, we're celebrating the incredible Associates who make our hospitals thrive — like Karen, who began as a CSR and never stopped growing and like Joanne, who sought mentorship and support to obtain her VTNE.

At VCA, we're proud to champion our veterinary technicians every step of the way — offering mentorship, encouragement, and the resources to help you reach your full potential.

To every vet tech in our VCA family: thank you. What you do matters deeply — to our teams, to our patients, and to the pet owners who trust us with their most beloved companions.

The heart, hands, and superheroes of our hospital! 🐾

This week is National Veterinary Technician Week, and we want to take a moment to shine a huge spotlight on our incredible veterinary technicians and assistants! 💙

Vet techs wear a dozen hats every single day. They are our:
• Nurses providing gentle patient care and administering medication
• Lab Technicians running bloodwork, urinalysis, and cytologies
• Radiographers taking diagnostic X-rays
• Anesthetists & Surgical Assistants monitoring vitals during surgery
• Dental Hygienists cleaning and scaling teeth
• Comfort Givers holding frightened pets and reassuring worried pet parents

Behind every healthy pet and every successful day at our hospital is a team of devoted techs who pour their whole hearts into this work.
Please join us in celebrating and thanking our technician team! Drop some love and appreciation in the comments below! 👇🐾✨

Every surgery starts long before the first incision. It starts with a veterinary technician who has spent years mastering their skills, anticipating needs, monitoring vitals, and showing up fully prepared for every patient who comes through the door.

Vet techs are the heart of every OR team, and their skill and dedication make a difference every single day. At some VCA specialty hospitals, we take surgical collaboration even further. Some of our teams include Certified Surgical Technologists (CSTs) — professionals who earned specialized degrees specifically to support surgeons in the OR.

The result? Less time under anesthesia. Better outcomes. And a team that truly works as one. 💙

Because every patient is somebody's pet — and they deserve nothing less than the best.

World Mental Health Day, we often talk about the joy, peace, and emotional support pets bring into our lives. But behind every healthy, happy pet is a team of veterinary professionals who pour their hearts into making that care possible.

Veterinary medicine is a career driven by pure passion and deep empathy, but it can also be profoundly taxing. Veterinary professionals frequently navigate:

🔹 Emotional highs and lows: Celebrating a new puppy's arrival in one room while guiding a family through heartbreaking loss in the next.

🔹 Compassion fatigue: The physical and emotional exhaustion that comes from caring deeply for patients in distress day after day.

🔹 Long, demanding hours: Delivering urgent, critical care when time and energy are stretched thin.

Mental health challenges within veterinary medicine are real, but open conversation and community support make an immense difference.

How can pet parents support their veterinary teams?

Extend patience: Emergencies and critical cases are unpredictable; grace during unexpected waits means the world.

Say thank you: A kind word at checkout, a handwritten note, or a positive review can lift an entire clinic's spirits.

Treat the team as partners: We all share the same goal—giving your beloved pet the happiest, healthiest life possible.

To our veterinary staff, technicians, customer service representatives, and doctors: thank you for your resilience, your compassion, and your relentless devotion. We see you, we value you, and we stand with you today and every day. 💚🐾

Sometimes the best therapy has four paws and a tail. 🐾💚

Tomorrow is World Mental Health Day (10/10), and we’re taking a moment to honor the quiet heroes who greet us at the door, listen without judgment, and remind us to breathe when life gets overwhelming.

Did you know science backs up what our hearts already feel?

✨ Stress Relief: Just 10 minutes of petting a dog or cat significantly lowers cortisol levels (the stress hormone).

✨ Grounding & Presence: Caring for a pet anchors us in the present moment, offering routine and structure when anxiety sets in.

✨ Unconditional Companionship: Pets combat loneliness and boost oxytocin—the "feel-good" hormone that fosters feelings of trust and calm.

✨ Movement & Fresh Air: Daily walks encourage mindfulness, physical activity, and regular breaks from screen fatigue.

Your pet doesn’t care about your inbox or your to-do list; they just love you for who you are.

💬 Let's fill the feed with comfort today: Drop a photo of your pet in the comments or share one way they've helped you through a tough day! 👇

Did you know that October is Adopt-a-Shelter-Pet Month? 🐾🖤

🐶✨ If you have room in your home and your heart, this month is the perfect time to visit our local shelters: City of New London Animal Control and Waterford/East Lyme Animal Control, and give an incredible rescue pet a forever home.

🏥 Welcoming a New Rescue? Get Established with Vet Care at VCA New London Animal Hospital!
If you’re adding a furry friend to your family, getting established with a veterinary hospital right away is one of the most important first steps. From initial wellness checkups and vaccine updates to parasite prevention, nutrition advice, and microchip registration, our team at VCA New London Animal Hospital is here to partner with you for a lifetime of happy, healthy tails through our Care Club Wellness Plans.

Not in a position to adopt right now? You can still make a huge difference in the lives of shelter pets today!

📦 Support from Home: The animal control officers maintain an ongoing Amazon Wish List stocked with everyday essentials—wet & dry food, cat litter, cleaning supplies, durable chew toys, and cozy bedding. It’s recently been picked through by generous donors, but they add to it whenever they are in need of food and supplies. They also accept monetary donations to get these animals the vet care they need so they can be as healthy as possible before adoption.

Purchasing even one item helps keep rescue dogs and cats healthy, well-fed, and comfortable while they wait for their families.

👉 How to help:

1. Follow Waterford/East Lyme Animal Control and City of New London Animal Control on Facebook
2. Click the Amazon Wish List link in the comments here.
3. Items purchased from the list will ship directly to the shelter's door.
4. Share this post to help spread the word about Adopt-A-Shelter-Pet month!

Extra love shouldn’t mean extra pounds. 🐾❤️
Did you know that over 50% of dogs and cats in the US are currently overweight? October is National Pet Obesity Awareness Month, and our goal isn't to judge—it’s to help your pets live longer, happier, and more active lives!
Just like in people, carrying extra weight puts tremendous stress on your pet’s body and can lead to:
• Early or worsening arthritis & joint pain
• 💓 Heart disease and high blood pressure
• Diabetes (especially in cats)
• ⏳ A reduced lifespan by up to 2.5 years
The good news? A few small, guided changes can make a massive difference in their energy and comfort! 🐕🐈
⚖️ How We Can Help:
• Body Condition Score (BCS) Evaluation: Learn your pet’s ideal weight range.
• Custom Nutrition & Calorie Plans: Tailored feeding guidelines (including healthy treat swaps!).
• Prescription Weight-Management Diets: Formulated to burn fat while keeping them full and satisfied.
• Underlying Health Screening: Rule out thyroid or metabolic issues that can stall weight loss.
Let’s work together to get your pet feeling light on their paws again! 🍂✨

☂️🌧️ We heard it might get a little wet and windy this weekend... ⛈️☂️

We will be watching the weather to make sure our clients, patients and staff all stay safe this weekend.

At this point, we expect to be open as usual both Friday and Saturday. If we have no power or if trees/flooding are a problem and change our plans, we will post about it here!

As always, please be safe and use your best judgement on the roads, and we'll do our best to be here for you!
